I love Baldur. An underrated antagonist for GOW. Pretty much every boss just wanted Kratos to suffer, wanted revenge, were purely maniacal, driven by fear, paranoia, but Baldur simply wanted the sensation of feeling, to be free of being numb. He is sadistic, and cruel and evil, but for all we know he's only like this because of how he grew up with Odin, and how Freya made a costly mistake. He could've been different had he not been put through this. You will absolutely love Raganrok, especially for the new/old characters and how it make you hate/love them

btw freya is a great warrior. however as told by mimir in a boat story, one of odin's curses was that he "robbed her of her warrior spirit" and "she can't fight even to defend herself", and i think that's why kratos intervened.

I was bewildered when this first came out and a lot of people didn't understand Freyas reaction. I'm not a biological father but as a youth leader, I'm a spiritual parent to my students and you really come to see them as tour own. You'll go to any lengths to protect them and like Freya, feel that "parental rage" that comes when you see them hurt or worse by others. And if the worst case scenario happens, you're changed forever and you don't forgive yourself for letting it happen

There's definitely the unconditional love of a parent involved. But I also think Freya's actions throughout the fight/reaction at the end also comes from the fact that deep down, she knows that she was the one who really deserved to die. Yes, she stands by her decision to take away his feelings but at the same time she's admitted that it was selfish of her. I get this sense that she's like "I think we could move past this. But I can't say you're wrong for wanting to kill me."

That only works for a child that isn't as fucked up as he is. He wasn't going to stop. Not trying to murder her and not trying to murder Kratos and his son. I AM a parent and I can tell you now there are limits. They get killed attacking someone, because that person acts in self-defense, isn't a legitimate reason to flip your shit. She saw it for herself. With her own eyes. She's wrong. She doesnt have to like it. But she should UNDERSTAND it. Especially as a warrior. He's a grown ass man and she treats him like a child and then acts like he's not responsible for his actions nor the consequences. No, she's wrong.

I can understand from both directions. From one of my favorite books a character explained it like this - "who would you rather face, a 6'4 250 lbs man who is knowingly in the wrong, or a mother who wrongly believes with everything she has that you kidnapped her child?" One can be reasoned with, the other cannot. I think the Devs should have also thrown in that the death of Baldur is what leads to Ragnarok.

Mistletoe didn’t make the promise because it was too young to understand. While a lot of the gods were amusing themselves trying to hurt Baldur after they knew of this spell of invulnerability, Loki was not so amused and so gave his blind brother Hother a twig of mistletoe, not being able to see what it was threw it at Baldur which killed him stone dead, the gods wept and blessed mistletoe to only be used for happy things, like kissing under perhaps.

In the version I read, Freya didn't even bother getting Mistletoe to make the promise to not harm Baldur because she considered the plant completely harmless and the thought of it hurting her son was laughable.

I'd say there's probably an endgame checklist that's somewhere between "completionist" and getting some of the more main sidequests done. Like the lore doors, visit different locals, visit all available realms, and take on all the Valkeryies. It's not a must, but I'd say some of it should be done if they plan on doing the next game. A lot of the side stuff is still content or lore.

I feel so bad for Baldur 😭 This beloved golden god of light moulded into a deranged madman by Freya’s spell. 100 YEARS of feeling absolutely nothing, not the wind on his face nor the beat of his own heart. He couldn’t even feel the hatred he held for the mother who cursed him. The cruelest thing is that 20 minutes after Baldur is freed from his unfeeling century-long nightmare, he is put down by Kratos. Between Freya’s maternal paranoia & Odin’s lies, Baldur had no chance of changing. He could never learn to love again, filled only with hate & misery. Whether or not Kratos stopped him from killing Freya, his fate would’ve been the same. It was simply too late for the God of Light…

Seeing Baldur fight after his spell is broken is the most tragic part of his story because it reveals that his natural god ability is to absorb and deflect, and wield elements that harm him, such as fire and ice. Since he has to be harmed for it to work, Freya's spell nullified it. Even worse, that ability probably would have protected him just as much as Freya's spell. More so, even, because pain is a crucial warning sign for our bodies.

Loved your excitement about the boss fight, the Chekov's mistletoe and the story developments! It was such a great climactic battle; I still marvel at how well it ties everything together. And the way you called out how great Jeremy Davis' acting was! Absolutely, everyone brought their A-game for sure but he really made Baldur feel so real. Good luck with the Muspelheim trials! The writers of this game did a brilliant job of casting new perspectives on the personalities of these gods; again, in "traditional" Norse mythology, Baldur was the god of light and beauty, not some crazed tracker-just like how Odin was "normally" perceived as a wise, strong leader, not a power-hungry, paranoid autocrat (Thor, however, is usually a destructive goon 😅).

Muspelheim and Niflheim are both meant to be 'fun things to do once you've basically got the main campaign wrapped up'. They're skippable from a storyline perspective, but if you're committed to doing the entire Valkyrie questline they're both required for that.

@@cait_and_kati Correct, in fact the armor with the best stats in the game is craftable from resources exclusively obtained in Niflheim. Oh, and on a significantly darker note I suppose, unlike things that simply won't catch flame, human "inflammability" is just like that of green wood. Sufficient heat + time to remove enough of the water = on fire. Though my personal experience with this was *relatively* minor, I did have an unfortunate ~1-3 second encounter with a blowtorch that lit my bare elbow like a candle. Hardly felt a thing remarkably, but it did require a minor surgery an took ages to heal. So to whom it may concern, do be careful. :) Peace🖖

You've got the core seed of the Baldur/mistletoe myth. Frigg (who, in the original myths was a separate figure from Freya, but it's suspected that the two goddesses were conflated over time. Some tellings treat them as the same person, some tellings treat them as separate people) originally set out to make Baldur invulnerable not out of general protectiveness, but a SPECIFIC fear for his life because his death had been foretold in a prophecy. Her missing the mistletoe is sometimes attributed to her seeing it and thinking that it was so small and soft that it couldn't possibly be a danger to Baldur, and sometimes attributed to her simply overlooking and forgetting about it. In the myths, once she'd established Baldur's invulnerability the Gods of Asgard took to making a game of chucking deadly things at Baldur just for fun. Hodr, the blind god of darkness and night (and Baldur's brother, counterpointing Baldur's role as a sun god) wasn't able to take part simply due to his blindness. Loki saw an opportunity for mischief in this, and came to Hodr in the guise of an old crone, promising to help him join in this game that all the other gods were enjoying. Loki gave Hodr a bow, and arrows crafted of mistletoe, and guided his aim so that he was sighted on Baldur, and told him when to loose his shot. Baldur was struck dead, Hodr was blamed initially, and the prophecy's fulfillment marked the beginning of Ragnarok. The gods later figured out it was Loki who tricked Hodr (after punishing Hodr as a kinslayer), and what they did to Loki in reprisal... well, look, that mythological rendition of Loki had SOMETHING coming for killing Baldur, but even the myths paint it as maybe being disproportionate. Like, we're talking Loki being bound to a stone table below the roots of the world tree by the entrails of both of his half-Aesir sons, after one of his half-Aesir sons was turned into a ravening wolf to kill the other. The Dragon Nidhoog dripped venom into his face, which his Asgardian wife (and mother of the two murdered sons) was permitted to catch in a bowl... but only so that the caustic venom would shock him suddenly whenever the bowl filled and she had to empty it. If anything's gonna convince a guy to turn on the people he used to call friend, that's the kind of shit that would do it. Plus, Baldur is supposedly one of those gods that's kind of a christ figure. He's prophecied to return from the dead after Ragnarok to serve as Allfather to a new generation of Aesir.

There’s just something so emotionally intense about the moment Kratos kills Baldur. It’s not even gory or especially graphic. It’s the emotions that hits so hard. This is one of the first time Kratos has killed a god not out of revenge or anger but to protect someone. And the audience knows the consequences of how this will affect Freya.

21:55 Kratos and Atreus trust each other and are working together so well at this point. Kratos doesn't even have to say what he is doing and what he wants for Atreus to understand what he means. Kratos just gives a little nod and looks back to signal Atreus that he is going to jump with Baldur, and he wants Atreus to follow him. And Atreus follows without questioning his father at all.

42:00 wonderful question. And as Mimir might explain, magic is weird. But what it mostly comes down to is that the magic that Freya taps into the most is the being of the thing. In Norse mythology every thing, from the deer in the woods to the rocks on the mountain have some form of sentience. A will of their own. It is not that Freya made things unable to harm Baldur, it is that everything promised Freya to not harm Baldur...except for Mistletoe, which was playful and stubborn. So, totally right on the money! Freya got every thing except for one, so she only had to protect her son from one thing. Sounds more doable.

55:53 Mh, lore is...well, yeah. Lore. Within this game it is said that some giants, such as Groa (I don't know how to use special symbols), could see the future, but not only the future. Things that once were, things that are and things that are yet to be. So it is always a little hard to interpreted the Jotnar Shrines found in this adventure, even for the smartest man alive. Personally I think that the future shapes the past if you are informed by it. Such as Freya trying everything in her power to keep her son safe is what sets the path for Baldur to eventually die by Kratos' hands. Because if Freya did not know Baldur would die... She might not have taken Baldur's sense of touch Baldur might not have resented her and the two loving each other could have accepted Atreus' mercy. And thus the future shapes the present, to again become the future.

What an incredibly frustrating point to stop.... then again, enjoy Nifelheim. It's not so much an Ice World... but it is a very different level. Freya brought all of us on herself, and Baldur, because she had a vision of someone killing Baldur after his birth. However, it can maybe be safely said that, her taking everything away from Baldur which makes like worth living is what caused him to get killed in her vision. It's a vicious cycle that is in the end, caused by her. She is definitely not the victim, no matter the lens through which you view this. I do wonder if the one she saw killing Baldur was Kratos, which is why she goes out of her way to hide them from him, she also recognized him immediately and knew what he was. It's never brought up and there's not any journal entries about it. That only applies to this game, the devs did deviate every now and then from the actual mythos, but for the most part, it's fairly accurate.

Yes, I feel like him killing his wife and daughter is a lot worse than killing his "father",Kratos had zero attachment to Zeus being his father, because he never raised him, Kratos finds out like the day before he kills Zeus that Zeus is his father. And Zeus was a piece of shit that deserved to die. I understand they were just hammering home the cycle of a child killed their parent. But in terms of the awful shit Kratos has done, killing Zeus is pretty low on the list.

@@Souphover that’s one perspective. another is that Kratos doomed his entire homeland to the literal apocalypse while Freya, as bad of a thing as she did, only hurt a single person. Like, there are tons of dead greek children due to what Kratos did, never able to live their lives because they were cut too short. Baldur was a a maniacal piece of shit. Not saying Freya did nothing wrong, but to say what Freya did is so much worse is, in my opinion, heavily underselling Kratos’ sins.
