24:43 According to the game's director Eric Williams there was a bit of mistake when they did the motion capture of this scene that they kept in. Christopher Judge accidentally missed grabbing the horn off of Heimdall's back here. He was supposed to grab it on the first attempt, but after he missed, he immediately snatched it off angrily on the second attempt. After they finished filming the take Chris apologized and said that he would get the horn off cleanly the next time. The director decided to keep it in because he felt that it would make sense that Kratos being upset by killing Heimdall when he was trying to avoid doing so and having Heimdall call him "Monster" would throw Kratos off a bit. So, missing the grab would make sense and then Kratos grabbing it angrily a second later shows his frustration, which fits the scene perfectly. So, they kept it in.

Heimdall felt like a classic god of war villain, and definitely one of the game’s highlights. He reminded me of Hermes in God of War III, and I was expecting him to crumple in a similar way once his foresight was overcome. But as Heimdall himself said, true power emerges when the time is right. He could more than back up that trash talk. Seeing every move you’re gonna make coming is one thing. Casually *bending time* is something else. That “slow down” moment after Heimdall is hit for the first time in centuries is such an *oh shit* moment. Then he’s regrowing limbs of Bifröst & laughing like the Green Goblin. He’s the only one who has pushed Kratos far enough to go full Ghost of Sparta. His death may not have been as bloody or brutal as the Greek Gods, but I’ve never seen so much *hatred* in Norse Kratos’ eyes.
@AdelaideBen17 күн бұрын
And while they clearly tried to copy Hermes... this was one of the most disappointing boss-fights in the game. For all the "oh ... he can do this"... literally none of it matters. He's a one note villain that's almost comically easy to beat. It's ok to try and upsell the game... but Heimdall was one of a few reasons why I actually dislike the game. For all the build-up, he was one of the least interesting fights in the entire game.

34:22 Roughly translated this is what Birgir was saying. "Cattle die, and kinsmen die, and so one dies one's self; One thing now that never dies, the fame of a dead man's deeds."

At the end of this prayer he would normally scream "For Odin!" but, because he freed himself of Odins teachings he did it for his friends, for Vanaheim.

It seems incredible to me that until this episode no one has commented on it (or maybe they have, but I haven't realized it). When you are in combat with Kratos, there is a meter where your weapon symbol is. No matter what weapon you are using at the time, if you land several hits without taking damage you will see that meter fill up, then there is an indicator to activate an ability by pressing L1 + △, this makes your attacks deal more physical and status damage The ax will have ice damage, the blades will have fire damage and the spear will have wind damage. I hope the comment is helpful.

Honestly, the Vanaheim side quests could be their own separate series.
@kellypedersen65906 күн бұрын
Admittedly, so are the remaining side quests in Svartalfheim . . . and Midgard; and I know you're not a fan of Alfheim, but there are some VERY cool side quests out in the deserts there (of course, I always liked Alfheim). Vanaheim, though . . .man, the map gets bigger the more side quests you do, it seems.

Kratos definitely proved the norms right. It didn't matter why or how he killed Heimdall, it only matter that he did. They choices/nature of both Kratos and Heimdall was predictable.

He proved them right because in the note he writes about Heimdall he wrote "I feel satisfied". He is, deep down, the same as always, just a little better. That is why in his last moments Heimdall says (while looking him in the eyes aka reading Kratos) "Monster" or something like that. That's just my personal lore tho.

the second combo where kratos land his first blow is because he threw the same combo as the fist time but knew Heimdall would block a single left that Kratos throws just like the first time so Kratos's fight IQ just had him grab the arm that blocked

You did great in that fight with Heimdall. I’ve watched a few playthroughs and takes people a while to catch that third trick with making the land mines. Finally landing that punch is so satisfying. There really is something so emotional about Kratos killing Heimdall. You should look up the translation of Birgir’s chant before he jumps. Roughly translated is that everything dies unless you have a death worth speaking about.
@DariusFrench62737 күн бұрын
I just love how quickly the end of the fight normally just completely switches the players perspective on the situation; from WANTING Kratos to beat the living shit out of Heimdall to suddenly being terrified of the pitfalls he falls back into, especially as Heimdall calls Kratos a monster and Kratos almost immediately is showered with a look of regret. Kudos to the acting there but god, it makes that line about us breaking fate or fate breaking us all the more poignant…..for later.
@Michaeljefferson90007 күн бұрын
Heimdall's final word is absolutely haunting for anyone that cares about how Kratos feels about himself. As a minor refresher, Heimdall has the power to see your intent, read your mind, emotions, and nature. This, of course, makes his complete trust in Odin even more interesting; either Odin doesn't lie to him, or more likely, Odin believes that his own falsehoods are the truth. But when Heimdall looks in that moment and calls Kratos a "monster," he isn't taunting him or insulting him. He's stating what he sees behind Kratos' eyes. And in that moment, Kratos is horrified. Kratos has spent literal centuries, longer than Heimdall has even been alive, trying to distance himself from the man who flattened entire cities for over a decade just to spite the Olympians. He no longer wants to even think about the man who caused an Apocalypse to secure his personal revenge. He truly, _truly_ hates the man who was so blinded by ambition that he was tricked into killing his own wife and daughter. But here, in this moment? The monster came back. Kratos felt satisfaction in the moment. And he knows that isn't a good thing. He became the exact opposite of what he wanted. "We must be better."

Hellll yeah, this is one of if not my favourite fight in this entire game, for so many reasons! All things considered, you did really well against Heimdall. And the music is FIRE! The same music that was used in the fight against Magni and Modi, as a matter of fact. A little easter egg: Christopher Judge actually failed to grab Gjallarhorn the first time from Heimdall's corpse, but that mistake felt so in character for Kratos in that moment (because he went back to being the horrible genocidal maniac for just a few seconds), that director Eric Williams decided to keep that mistake in the animation! As for Birgir's sacrifice: what a man. We barely knew him up to this point, and then the writers pull a SPECTACULAR heroic self-sacrifice out of their butts, which still works! Good luck exploring the crater to find him, it is MASSIVE. On the frozen bolt, now what could possibly have caused this?🙃 Without spoiling, you only need to ask yourself: who owned the axe to create such a phenomenon...?

Glad you didn't go with the "he had to kill him" trend, the whole point is that he hlcould have. Keep him pinned, cripple him further or just understand that he completely outclasses him now. @noisemagician That's a bit condescending. They stated more than once that they were spoiled by the comments about certain things. @@noisemagician You're claiming that someone is less observant than you because they didn't come to a conclusion you did based on your own misconceptions, going as far as to say that "If you missed them before, you will miss them now," and bragging about how obvious it was to you. That's pretty condescending, especially given that you provided no actual evidence of your claim aside from the historically unreliable study of their "facial expressions" and "body language" (both of which have been psychologically studied to be only marginally consistent to observers on the minor scale you're suggesting, and have been shown to have significantly different interpretations across cultures). I know you weren't talking about the spoilers. I was giving that as the only example of them knowing or expecting something concrete ahead of time, because we've all seen the spoilers and they've specifically mentioned them during the playthrough.

Birgir's sacrifice is unfortunately not impactful. We were not introduced to the guy, if you don't make the effort to go to him when roaming in Freyr's camp, you don't even hear his voice. And the barely speaks even then. Then he gets this epic moment but... Nothing seems earned. I don't know. After that we get informations about him, but it's a shame it comes so late.
@cait_and_kati6 күн бұрын
I thought it was an odd choice as well. The sacrificial moment was impactful on its own but not in a “wow, that loyal companion died for his captain” and more of a “wow, that was a big sacrifice from…that guy.” -K

Heimdall made one of the classic blunders in history. Classic blunders are: 1) Getting involved in a land war in Asia. 2) Messing with America's boats. There are many examples as to why that's a bad idea. The most famous of which was what happened to Japan at the end of WW2 after they got America involved by bombing Pearl Harbor. 3) But Heimdall's mistake was threatening the boy in front of Kratos.
