I gotta say: I'm happy when he finds a painting that had been previously done that was actually handled with care by the previous restorer. Maybe not to 21st century standards, but certainly with professionalism and care.
@XYGSteveАй бұрын
I was going to say something similar. We often see former 'conservators' that are basically hacks that ruin paintings either with 'cleaning' or 'touch ups', or simply painting that were never maintained. This just seems like a maintenance restoration of something that was due...
@en1909s9iahАй бұрын
I think he doesnt usually shows these kinds of works because they require way less effort, and would not make a great "makeover" finale.
@nationalsocialism3504Ай бұрын
The amount of "cleaning" that was done was still a fair amount of scrapping the painting requiring adding all the facial hair back on
@tiwantiwaabibiman2603Ай бұрын
Well, only up to a certain degree. The care ended when they cut the oval own and the inlay to make the painting fit was definitely amateur.
@nrml76Ай бұрын
@@tiwantiwaabibiman2603 Depending on what the damage to the original painting was, the limitations of materials and technology at that time and most importantly, the possible inability of the owner to pay for a very extensive restoration, that might not have been an amateur decision at all.

The cleaning is always a treat as we get to see the parts of the painting that have been diffused under varnish, dirt and grime for years. I was surprised at all the really small spots of paint loss, but Julian and his magic pfaint brush soon made things so much better. As an aside, I try to imagine what it must feel like to wear a ruff, and I can only think that it must have been irritating, have you ever worn a ruff, what was it like ? Great post as always looking forward to the frame restoration.

Having had many paintings handled by a conservator for myself, I've learned so much more about what actually goes on in the conservation process through Julian's videos. Now, when I take paintings to my conservator, I can have a much more intelligent conversation about the conservation needs of a painting and ask better questions. Julian's videos have also helped me when considering whether to purchase a painting or not, based on its condition. Thanks, Julian!

I really enjoyed this video; seeing the skimming on paintings get fixed always makes the biggest difference to me, cause even with big tears; what's missing almost becomes a plain mystery, but with skimming it's like seeing it through a net; it'a clearly visable, but it's just made worse by what's in front.

I would like to learn how much a restauration would cost. I mean... it's nice to see how the restorator works and how a painting gets improved back to glory. But I really would like to see the customer, who is happy about the "new" old painting and then tells you/us, how his decision-making process was like when he heard how much it would cost. Because let's be honest... even if someone here has an “old master” hanging in their living room, any of us viewers would be more than hesitant to decide whether or not a restoration would be justifiable in terms of price. We all have a rough idea of what a house or car costs and what the costs of renovation/refurbishment or repair might be. With art, however, the situation is completely different. And while many people won't have a 30-year-old car repaired because the costs are too high, the “I'll throw the old one way and buy a new one” mentality is less likely to arise with a 200-300-year-old painting.

I have watched nearly the whole catalogue of videos on this channel now, but I dont think I have ever felt the need to comment before, but this painting made me want to. I have never seen anything but virtual perfection in the workmanship. However, there were areas in this one I noticed; the beard looked a bit too spiney and wispy, there was a patch in the collar (think it may be known as a 'Rough'?) that was far too grey, and the profile of the nose was changed to look very thin by the line down the bridge that was used to touch up, being a different colour to the rest of it. I paused it to look at the painting, and I feel it's not his best touching up, but certainly better than I could do! Overall the work is virtually flawless, but I think some constructive criticism never hurts anyone. Our eyes don't lie!

I’ve always wanted to ask this. Do you ever go back over the painting a second time when cleaning with cotton applicators? I often think dirt and grime residue is still on the surface. Sometimes the cotton just seems to be moving the dirt around. I get very worried when I think the painting really isn’t clean. I think I have OCD when it comes to this, haha.

Well, due to obvious reasons, I just searched for the word "beard" in the entire comments section and found it 53 times! There is indeed "something funny going on with his beard". Maybe the original artist himself changed that at a later time? I guess we all somehow missed the usual in-depth explanation about how you decided to "regrow" his beard like that... Maybe you oould spend a few minutes in the second video on that?
@stevejohnston5191Ай бұрын
For the first time I was quite surprised by Julian’s retouching. It may just be an artefact of the video, and something not captured or not obvious, but I’m not certain about the longer part of the beard, nor the additional shading between the bottom of the face and the ruff. Perhaps this is explained elsewhere, but it left me a little confused. Then again, as I said, I’m watching a video and may be missing something that was visible to the naked eye.

@Barteks2xАй бұрын
One thing I keep seeing you say is that the synthetic materials won't deteriorate... which I don't think is entirely true. Polymers do in fact degrade, though slowly, even in the absence of UV light. They will sure last a long time, but will noticeably degrade within human lifetime (this applies to both nylon and PET). And in fact they degrade in somewhat similar way to those natural materials used in the past - the long chains of molecules break apart, or oxidize, and the material becomes weak and brittle. And we don't even have that much data on how long they last because they don't exist *that* long yet. Wood, in the right environment, almost certainly can last longer than most plastics.
