Use 2 inch pvc pipes and elbows to create a folding labyrinth of pipe work inside your cooler. Each end of the pipe should project out of your cooler’s long length. Using a 12 volt computer fan at one end to drive the ambient air through the pipe network, you load up your cooler with ice cubes and in a few minutes you have nice chilled air coming out of the opposite end. The benefit is the warm air never touches the ice surface and the ice lasts much, much longer. Even when fully melted the cold water still chills the pvc ductwork and any air pushed through it. This is an old undercover surveillance vehicle trick for long stakeouts in hot cars and vans.
@mattcolver12 жыл бұрын
You just invented the still.
@damonm32 жыл бұрын
Na, just a straight pipe down to almost the bottom of cooler with ice to the top. And a drain pipe to remove all melt. Air will naturally make a better labyrinth through the ice. And direct contact with ice is better. If you want the temp to actually drop by 20-30° needs to be direct. Otherwise of course yours is second best and lasts way longer. I wanna see a comp between the two

Staying at a friend’s house in Woodland Hills Ca, where the temps were 110, but she was too cheap to turn on the AC , had me resorting to build one of these. I dropped the temps to 77 and was quite comfortable. I don’t know if I would do this in humid areas though.

I have some USB charged battery powered fans that would work while camping , for me I have a couple power systems that can run a USB fan for days on a single charge . Might be a fun addition to the family camping gear , I wouldn't use it myself when I am out with just me and the dog but when we all go out I'm sure a couple people in the family would love it . I would probably use a combination of large ice blocks plus cubed ice , maybe even put a couple diverters on the lid to increase the distance the air has to move over the ice before exiting at the vent . I've done something similar in the past by just opening the ice chest with blocks in it and pointing a fan at it but these days battery powered devices are much better than they used to be so a dedicated device isn't out of the question .

Putting water and salt on ice is actually really smart, because firstly, the water-ice mixture will always retain a constant temperature of 0 degree Celsius, due to heat transfer during the solid to liquid state change. Also, salty water has a lower freezing point than pure water (which is the reason why salts are used on roads in winter to prevent ice from forming). This further reduced the mixture temperature from 0 to below 0, and heat is absorbed from the air during the process. The colder mixture temperature resulted in much colder air being blown out, which accelerated the cooling of the tent :D

Get your fan to blow underneath the ice. Since it is mounted, use 1 inch Styrofoam that's placed at an angle inside the cooler from side to side, leaving about a 4 inch gap at bottom of cooler yet little to no gap on top for when the lid is closed which allows the air to come in but not hit the ice from up top. The objective is to push the the cold up for beneath the ice through the vent.

@dawndee54012 жыл бұрын
@@PlayaHataz710 The fan cannot hit the ice directly. You will have to place the ice on some sort of open screen rack roughly about 3 to four inches from the bottom. The rack has to support the ice while in-between the ice and the fan, there must be an divider such as thick Styrofoam. The Styrofoam stops the outside air from hitting the ice sideways. The styrofoam must be cleared at the bottom of cooler by at least 2 inches while at top leaving no room for the fans air to travel across the top of cooler while lid is closed. This will push out the cold air inside.

When you put the ice in the cooler put roughly 2 inches and sprinkle kosher salt on top of it put another 2 inches of ice repeat the process with salt until the cooler is full give it 20 minutes before you turn on your fan. At this point you have a solid chunk of ice inside of the cooler because what happens is the salt starts to melt ice ice it’s on top freezes and becomes a solid barrier. This being said your concepts a great idea it’s just how you use the ice. If you dump straight ice it’s gonna melt right away if you use this method it will work great.

Love this and I was thinking of doing this for my RV since my air conditioner went out. Now going to try it. Just wondering how long the ice will last. Some coolers will hold a few days in AZ heat. Home depot sells a fan for a 5 gallon bucket and i believe it was close to 100.00. This is much cheaper!

Check out the comment above you. Use a block of ice and a 2" sheet of Styrofoam. Put the foam on top of the ice for a barrier so the ice will last longer. I'm also in AZ and will try it out. God bless

Definitely agree! Use the block ice if you can find it. It will last a lot longer!

I would like to see you do another test by partially opening an upper vent to let the air pressure from the fan push the hot air out. I think you will find the Temperature drop will be much faster.
@BaumOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Great idea Evan! I’ll have to do another video with it!!
@gnomish8442 жыл бұрын
Would need to be intaking air from the outside for that to work, which would work best in conditions like this where the ambient temperature inside is warmer than outside. Opening the vent while circulating only inside air wouldn't cause it to flow out, since you're not adding any air, and by cooling it, you're actually reducing the pressure. This would cause hot air to flow in. If it's colder outside than in, opening the vent would help without the unit. If you're pumping outside air in, you're increasing the pressure in the tent and your idea would work even better. Just circulating inside air around, if it gets colder than outside temp, would cause outside air to flow in rather than warm air that's risen to flow out.

Great and funny video. Yes, I’d like to see a version 2.0 with some of the strains in the comments like a reflective blanket, being in the shade, using a wider vent, using dry ice or block ice, and using a USB operated fan with battery bank. Enjoyed the infomercial at the beginning.

Ya don’t use dry ice. A friend Almost killed himself in his tent. Luckily he realized he was get nauseous and sleepy.
@matt71262 жыл бұрын
Was it kept inside of the tent? If not then you could use it to recirculate the air inside the tent while using the slightly colder air to make the ice last longer and possibly get the air to come out colder

Maybe an intake and exhaust fan? One blowing in one blowing out vs the vent. Getting a taller cooler and mounting fans on the top of each side.

If you have electric you could just use a portable AC unit. That what my brother does. The benefit I've seen for these type of coolers is that they can be battery powered
@richardmccombs6172 жыл бұрын
I tried this couple of years back. Problems as ice melted efficiency dropped. I put a drain rack in bottom to keep ice and water off bottom. Aluminum tray on top of rack and then a wicking towel attached to cover. This made it like swamp cooler. The thicker the aluminum tray the better.

A raised cover over the tent to add shade would probably drop the Temps another 10 to 20 degrees, replacing the fans with metal bladed fan would pump out for cold air. Making it just cool enough to sleep comfortably

Don't forget the cost for the ice and how to carry on so much ice for a camping trip. Best solution is choose a shady place and preferably near river or sea.

so I have a house that has two ACs in it, one for the original part of the house, and another that cools down the newer addon side. The one that's meant to cool down the smaller side shut down, and it's gonna be another 10 days until somebody is going to be able to repair it. I live in Texas, and this is July with a record smashing summer. So we've been roughing it with poor mans swamp coolers (towels soaked in water hanging on towel racks in front of a big fan). It took me a little bit but I figured out the same thing you did - adding salt, ice, and water together is the ticket. I use a generous amount of salt, and when I'm mixing in the water I can feel my hand get WAAAAY colder. I then leave the big bowl of it next to the fan with a measuring cup in it, and every so often I'll pour more water over the towels, and it works way better. If you guys need to make ANYTHING cold with ice, and it's not going to get ruined with salt, ALWAYS use salt, water, and ice together. Even cools down drinks 10x as fast.

Keep the fun videos coming sir! I really enjoyed your infomercial intro it was quite hilarious! I was wondering if there's a way to exhaust some of the hot air when you enter the tent like opening up all the flaps before you started the air conditioner? But you probably had already done that. I would think a tarp type tent over the tent itself would help as well. I would like you to do a review I know there's different versions what is the one I'm thinking of called the LifeStraw where you can drink water from the lake directly. That would be fun to watch.
@BaumOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I did not actually exhaust the tent, as I was curious as to what it would do! But in a normal scenario, you would definitely have the windows open to equalize the tent and be in the shade for sure! All great ideas! As for the life straw, I would love to do more reviews of camping gear more often. And I will keep the videos coming for sure! Thank you for your support 😊

Here's a thoughtful question. If you need a power cord to power the cooler fan. Why not just use a home Portable air conditioner inside the tent if your using a power cord anyway. This way don't have to worry bout running out of ice lmao

A couple of smaller fans like a drink cooler in your car it doesn't have to be so big you could run it off solar through the day 12v battery adding some metal for a fan to blow on to it will also help cool having a massive fan on top the ice is evaporating to quick. But you have the right idea.

1. Where did ice come from ? 2. Where did the energy source, Come from ? 3. Do you have an unlimited Supply of ice cubes ? 4. Wouldn't the ice last longer, If you used two ice chests To double wall it, like a thermos ? 9 June 2022, Thursday

I would add; if you have that much ice, place a kiddy pool inside the tent, fill it with ice and water..create a cold water bed

You can use a tarp to put over the top of your tent for shade. That helps out a lot !!!!!. And you can go one step further and make a wet waterfall type of a/C. With a fountain pump and some copper tubing. Also a washable a/C filter, called hog hair.

A jigsaw plate usually has an angle setting. This makes me think of the industrial Portacool. Maybe try a big sponge in the bottom. Top it with water below the sponge. So it gives an evaporative effect. No ice would lower the running cost. Although there would be an added humidity. I belive they call it the swamp cooler effect or something like that.
