In this video I will show you a time lapse build of the Aeronaut Triple Neo Speed. The fuselage consists of a GRP part combined with a carbon fiber tube. The wings are build as a classic balsa rib construction. The quality of the kit is very good with a fine selection of balsa sheets and a high accuracy of the laser cut parts. As usual for this kind of kits you have some room for own modifications. For example I replaced the original pulltruded carbon tube with a roll wrapped carbon tube to get more torsional strength. The trailing edges of the wings were reinforced with a carbon roving. To have a more carefree handling of the wings during attaching and removing I added 44g glass fiber to the inside of the skin in the area of the inner two rib fields. I strongly recommend to close the brass tube for the torsion rod as shown in the video. This prevents the torsion rod from sliding to one side which in the worst case could pull the rod completely out of the other wing. During flight this would definitely be a catastrophic failure.
All in all I really enjoyed the build and can recommend it for anyone who has some basic experience in balsa building. The good build instructions leave almost no room for mistakes.

Excellent build video, thank you for going to the trouble of publishing it. I have recently purchased a Speed wing kit and the pod and boom fuselage. I'm sure this tutorial will be of much help to me. What is the wall thickness of the CF tube you used for the fuselage? Greetings to all from Harrison, AR, USA.
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! The wall thickness is only 0.5 mm but due to the fibre orientation in 2 directions it can handle the loads quite well. Even though I have to say that the tail looks a bit shaky. But the old rule seems to apply: things that bend don‘t break. The shop where I purchased the CF tube is specialized on such gliders and they recommend this tube for tail designs like on the Triple Neo. Had no issues so far during all the flights. Enjoy your build!

Does it have everything you need to build all three wings? If not, can you build the big wing with removable sections in the middle to make all three usable?
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc Жыл бұрын
Hi, you need to decide which version you want to build and buy the respective kit. The kit only contains the parts for the one version. Consequently the Triple Neo can be ordered in 3 different kits. If you also want the other versions then you can order the wing kits separately. I have already bought the thermic wing and will build it during this winter. It can then be combined with my existing fuselage. Building the big wing with removable sections could be possible if you modify it but that will certainly add some weight.

@@bavarian_rc one other thing: what is that eliptical template you used for the wing? Did it come with the kit? Did you make it yourself? What is it made of?
@bavarian_rc

This thing is made of 3mm Depron and was part of the kit. It is used to align the spar and the skins. A quite clever solution that the manufacturer Aeronaut uses in many of their kits.

I respect massively anyone who still has the patience and skill to build and cover in this world of ultra ready to fly, I did secretly wish it was a pure glider though but with that speed wing I imagine some high speed passes are in order.
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc 2 жыл бұрын
There are the ones who like building and there are the ones who like flying. I like both! So the process of building a plane is something I really enjoy. The Triple Neo would also be a great pure glider but the next slope is more than 20 km away whereas my usual flying area is 2 minutes away from home. So having a motor is the most practical setup. Despite being a light weight build the Triple Neo can get pretty fast. Top speed was around 150 km/h in a dive. But due to the low weight it slows down pretty quickly. So typically I don‘t go too fast but just enjoy the great ability to float from one thermal to the other even over greater distances.

@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc Жыл бұрын
Thanks! A friend of mine had the same issue. The reason was that the balsa wood used for the horizontal and vertical stabilizer was more dense and thus heavier than the one on my Triple Neo. In consequence he used a 2200mAh battery instead of my 1800mAh battery and about 15g of balance weight in the nose. The total weight is about 100g higher than my Triple Neo. Nevertheless the flight performance is quite comparable. The extra weight helps a bit in windy conditions. The main advantage of the carbon tube shown in my video is the greater strength for torsional forces. the lower weight is a nice side effect. I hope you enjoy you Triple Neo!

@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc Жыл бұрын
Servus!

I bought this kit and wanted the speed like you but they sent me the RES version. I thought you could build what ever version you want in the one package. Wrong, it didn't have the parts to make the speed only the RES. I tried to tell them but all emails were in French so I got no where. So I'm stuck with the res version. Also the motor they recommended I bought and the motor mount holes didn't line up. And the spinner had to be cut way back for the spinner to work. The instrutions are in french so their useless. If it weren't for your video I'd really be up shit creek without a French paddle.

Oh man that‘s bad. Wrong version, everything in French and a shop that is not answering. I am happy to see that my video was helpful for you. I also had some difficulties with the motor installation. I used the recommended actro motor which fit nicely to the mounting holes. But it should be positioned at least 1 or 2mm further to the nose to ease the mounting of the prop and spinner. In the meantime I installed the Z-Spinner and props and it was even worse. I don’t know how advanced you are in the build but maybe it helps. The English instructions are available for download on the manufacturer web site (a bit hidden): aero-naut.de/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/1128-xx-Triple_NEO_instruction_en.pdf Let me know if I can help you for any remaining questions. Thank's so much for your help. I looked for the instructions and couldn't find it. I already built the wing tips . They need to tell people that all three models don't come in the box. Maybe we are just to suppose to know.
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc Жыл бұрын
The instructions were really not so easy to find. For the three different versions it depends on how the shop is advertising it. In the shop where I bought mine it was quite well explained that you need to decide which version you want to build and chose the correct one. Finally the triple is a great plane. You will like it. Just one additional tip, try to keep the tail as light as possible. It will be ok if you have light balsa in the kit but if the balsa is a bit on the heavy side you might need a lot of weight in the nose (or a bigger battery).

Thanks again. And yes some of the tail feathers were heavy stock. I dont like the fact that the res doesn't have ailerons. I was thinking about making some small ones if I can make some fit. Also you blow me away with how clean your work area is! (Unless of coarse, you edit that out!👍).

I have never tried a RES plane but I think they are designed to fly well without ailerons… but I have to admit that I prefer planes with ailerons. When shooting a video I try to keep my work bench as clean as possible. HI Robert, Very well done time lapse video of the Shaka design!!! I have made a 3-D print-out for the aero-naut servos. I had to remove about 0.5mm on either inner side of the bracket for a near perfect fit. So if tolerance allows, perhaps increase that measure by 0.5mm or 0.6mm on each side??? the holes for attaching the servo to the bracket are near perfect as is. Hence i am questioning if it is worthwhile widening the measurement or just simply filing away the excess material in order to have a perfect fit. If you do make a modification to the STL file i will certainly give it a trial in having a 3-D print made. Peter Have a Merry Christmas and may all the best wishes touch your life and your loved ones!
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc Жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, thanks for having a look at my Shaka video! Coming back to the servo frames I have a little issue when making the adjustment you proposed (0.5 increase of the space for the servo body on both sides). When I do this it intersects with the holes for the screws (actually cutting them open). Do you think I could increase the distance between the holes also a bit, like 0.5 on both side? I wonder why they made the holes so close to the servo body. In any case I made a new Version V1.1 (drive.google.com/file/d/1bao89wBdQm8YX4Qxk9BGyOjg_ymPBROb/view?usp=sharing) with a wider space for the servo body (0.5 on both sides). Mounting holes moved outwards by 0.1mm. Small doubler (or patch) put next to the holes which you can file down as needed (a lot easier than filing down the whole surface). I hope this works. Also to you and your loved ones all the the best and a merry Christmas. Robert

Nice build.... but! At 23.00 the webs for the wing joiner box should be vertical grain! Doing them long-grain is making me very nervous! I'd go so far as to say that they're almost pointless being long grain.
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc 2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right … but 😜! They are not foreseen in the original build kit and are more or less only to cleanly close the box. So it proves that you really watched my video in detail 👍 Greetings from Bavaria!

Hi Peter. Everything is ok for me. I am making progress on the Thermic wings. The basic structure of the LH wing is done. Currently I am in the middle of the RH wing. All in all the progress is slower than I was hoping for but there were so many other priorities in that last couple of weeks that building had to stick back a bit. The build process of the Thermic wings is almost identical to the speed wings. So In case my video will be too late for you then you could still follow the speed wings… at least for the beginning. In case you have specific questions just send me a comment. Realistically the video could be ready end of August. Enjoy the build!

Hi Peter, well finally I didn't manage to have the video for the Thermic Wings ready by end of August. But the good news is that the build is now finished. The remaining work will be to finalize the editing of the video which should not take more than 2 weeks from now as I always did some editing in parallel to the build. I hope this will still be ok for your build. What's your current status of your Thermic Wing build? Bye Robert

Hi, Thanks for the answer👍. Yes,i must say it direkt what i mean. In german is much easyer for me😅: Ich meine minute 48:43(video).

OK, that went quicker than I thought. I am not fully trusting the dimensions that I have taken from the Aeronaut website but it is worth a first try. Maybe I should have asked you to measure all dimensions yourself. You can download the STL here: drive.google.com/file/d/1caFB5bnmkaX2z9cBWS7PvestIN6Wr9fQ/view?usp=sharing Let me know if anything needs to be changed. I am a bit worried that there is not so much material between the 2.0mm mounting hole and the servo body (you will see what I mean) but with 26.5 mm distance between the center of the holes and a 23.5mm wide body there is not much left. I made a test print that was quite ok. I printed with 0.20 mm layer height and 25% infill. Weight is below 2g.

Hi, I have already bought the thermic wings for my triple neo and hope to build them during this winter. The build video for these wings will not be available before spring 2023. But the speed wings and the thermic wings are very similar. The servos I used are Graupner DES 428 BB MG. They are not easy to find on the market at the moment. Still an effect of the Graupner insolvency in 2019. Some of their other servo models are back on the market but not the 428. I was lucky that I still had some on stock. Hopefully the 428 will also come back soon. Maybe you can find an alternative with same dimensions. Nice project with the servo animated pilot! I have never done anything like that. Thanks! The eliptical "Spitfire" wing immediately caught me when I saw this plane. Despite being very light it can also go very fast (~160 km/h) in a dive, but you have to be careful not to overload the structure.

It is strange you needed to saw the nose of the body yourself. This will cause imbalance when it is not done correctly. With the high rpm's of the motor it would damage the motor. Why didn't the manufacturer did it already?
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc 2 жыл бұрын
It is maybe not so clearly visible in the video. The manufacturer didn’t cut it because you could also build it as a pure glider. But it is not a lot of work to cut the nose. Don’t worry about imbalance, the cut off part is not used as a spinner. The spinner is a separate part that comes fully balanced. I hope this answers you point.

@@bavarian_rc I think he's talking about if you cut the nose off and install the firewall crooked you can have a bad motor thrust line making it fly like crap.
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc 2 жыл бұрын
@DaVile Oh yeah I didn't think of that. Actually with the templates they provide in the kit the cutting of the nose and the glueing of the firewall are fairly straight forward and there is little room for mistakes. But I agreed that cutting the nose and fitting the firewall is still not my favourite job on a build :-)

Amazing build. Just one stupid question: it looks like the servo connectors on the fuselage side are wired for 2 servos per side. Is there a plan to use a wing with flaps in the future?
@bavarian_rc
@bavarian_rc Жыл бұрын
Thanks, great that you liked it. Well observed, indeed it is wired for 2 servos on each side. The Triple Neo can be combined with 3 different types of wings. The speed version (181cm wing span) which I built, a R.E.S. wing (200cm for the R.E.S. class without ailerons, just rudder, elevator and spoiler) and finally a thermic wing (251cm) with ailerons and spoiler. I already bought the thermic wing kit and will build it this winter. For sure I will also do a build video. There is no option for flaps and I don’t know how well they would work on the Triple. If you are looking for a comparable glider with flaps then have a look at the Helios or Helixx from Aeronaut.

@@bavarian_rc Thanks for the answer. Not sure if I will go for any of those you proposed. I have more things to fly than I would be able to. My last glider build was some 18 years ago before laser cut kits became so popular with saw and belt sanders so I watch those build videos with great fascination...

I started into the hobby when I was a teenager, which was back in the 1980‘s (gosh I‘m getting old). Cutting by hand was just normal. After some years the hobby went into a pause of more than 25 years before restarting. The evolution of the hobby since the late 1980‘s was just amazing. What didn‘t change for me is the fascination of a balsa build. But with laser cut kits this is a completely different level. Last build 18 years ago and still plenty of planes? That could happen to me as well 😂 The thing is that I love building as much as I love flying… Greetings from Bavaria

Thanks for your comment. Sticky tape is a quite simple and efficient way to make hinges. They are quite long lasting and if need be can be easily replaced. There was nothing magic to the CG checking so I didn‘t put it in the video. Basically I assembled the plane before glueing the battery support plate. By moving it forth and back with the battery strapped to it I figured out where to put it to balance without adding weight. I can focus a bit more on this step in my next build video.
