Mitch must go undercover as a female impersonator. Also, he's dating two ladies named Cindy who may or may not be the same person.

@@AllisonPregler It also makes me wonder...how did Cindy get home? Did she walk home in her presumably fancy heels she wore to the theater? Or did Mitch drive her home in stony silence and decide "Eh, sure, I could go home and change, but instead I'll go back to the beach and wait for Garner instead in clothes that are clearly completely unsuited to our planned activity for tomorrow!"?

I can't 100% confirm but the wig doesn't really seem to match the hair and they never show the body once it's in the boat, so my guess is they hired a cis woman to play the corpse and just held up a wig she wasn't wearing.

Someday you'll find the lost footage that finally answers the "two Cindys" mystery.
@henrygvidonas9573
@henrygvidonas9573 10 ай бұрын
They should have dropped that chase scene entirely. It's completely nonsensical with the two different "Cindies". It's played as if that's how Mitch met Cindy Cry-Cry for the B plot. But he didn't - and it has no relation to anything else in the episode. Chase Scene Cindy should form a band with Random Foggy Fire Escape Staircase Saxophone Guy. Two completely different people with no connection were named Cindy by their parents... like probably hundreds of thousands of other Cindies around the globe. Riveting stuff! Who knows how quickly this episode was cobbled together. The editing of the "Duncan" scenes is horrible, Garner's magically changing clothes, etc. The whole thing looks like a desperate rush job to meet a deadline. I would bet serious money that they had the "foggy nighttime saxophone guy" footage lying around as a "contingency reserve", to insert it as a cross-cut into any given moody night scene they needed to pad out to get an episode to full length. Same with the footage of Lou singing on stage at "Nights" while Mitch and Garner drive around in the Nicky-Pine-mobile all night to supposedly "find Ryan", in episode eight (aka "I used to be the second pilot before they frankensteined me into a flashback episode"). I guess that's why Chase Scene Cindy had to stay in this episode, too. They needed the minutes of runtime as padding to run out the clock. I don't think I'm completely on the wrong track with this theory, but who the hell knows with "Budget Nights". The show was put together with duct tape, gum, and desperation.

I mean... I don't know if this was meant to be "progressive" as much as it was giving a scenario wherein they could play "Mitch in a dress" for comedy. Still, along the same lines it's really weird to watch this stuff back and realize that people were just like... okay with it, or even laughed at it. Watching most comedies involving gay people from the early 2000s and earlier generally give me that uncomfortable feeling. I think that "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" might be one of the worst of all time, especially since it tries to turn the whole thing around at the end and have the writing suggest that it's actually pro-gay rights after being extremely insensitive and homophobic throughout. (Film Brain has a sort-of old, but good video on that movie, if anyone's interested.)

WHAT I hope this leads to another spinoff: Cindy Nights. Garner's trying to get Mitch to come out in the open about his feelings for him, but Mitch's got an iron closet I'll give them credit for actually treating the drag queens with respect Here comes.....THE NIGHT CLUBBER! I'm just glad Mitch is the bait instead of Rian for once Um, Cindy 2, he's constantly hitting on Rian and Garner. You didn't have a chance in the first place. @henrygvidonas9573
@henrygvidonas9573 Жыл бұрын
The Robin Williams movie was released in March 1996, this episode first aired in December 1995. So that's not possible, chronologically. I don't know, the original play "La Cage Aux Folles" and the super-successful 1978 French movie based on it had an influence, maybe? It's still one of the most successful foreign-language films ever in the US, according to Wikipedia. It won a Golden Globe and was nominated for three Oscars, including for "Best Director". Director Édouard Molinaro and Francis Ford Coppola who was nominated for "Apocalypse Now" lost to Robert Benton ("Kramer vs. Kramer"). No shame in that loss, I'd say! Plenty of TV shows did rather uninformed and stupid drag episodes in the 1990s, even before "The Birdcage". Some of them meant well, most didn't. And they pretty much all helped to cement the stereotype that all drag queens are gay and/or transsexual in the public conscience. Conversely, that also perpetuates the false notion that trans women are just gay men who like to dress like women for some "icky" reason, to this day.

Am I the only one surprised Baywatch never really tried for another plot around lgbt issues, what with its constant attempts to launch bids for emmies on hot button issues and the incresed visibility of the issue at the time? It would obviously be either a bit naff or a total train wreck, but it surprises me I guess we never got a plot about Mitch's never before seen distant relative transitioning or CJ's lesbian best friend or something.
@AllisonPregler
@AllisonPregler 4 жыл бұрын
While they loved Emmy grabs, they definitely went for the safer options. The AIDS episode was pretty bold for Baywatch though, even if they did a common tactic of making sure to note the character was straight. Which isn't to say straight people don't get AIDS, only that the reason it was such a dicey subject at the time was because it was heavily tied into the gay community. If they'd actually talked about that, it would be better than either time they brought up gay people at all (and this episode doesn't even technically mention them being gay, it's just assumed by the audience). BTW the only other time I recall Baywatch bringing up gay people was a girl on girl kiss to make someone jealous.

This is the closest Baywatch Nights gets to an interesting premise for a mystery IMO. I dunno, you could do something with celebrity obsessions and impersonators and such

So basically, Someone is trying to kill Dr. FrankenFurter in a weird parody of Psycho? Also, you say Whoopie wouldn't wear that, BUT she did work as a police officer with a talking dinosaur so, it may not be out of the bag.

I wonder how many of the drag queens in this episode were played by actual drag performers.

It feels like this episode was being written as it was filmed. Then parts were rewritten and they had to do reshoots.
