I'm looking very forward to testing this out... My kid is in a theater group and somehow I got sucked into running the board even though I have no idea what I'm doing (other than securing the absolute best seat in the house for every show). I've done two shows in the last couple of years and am about to do my third in a couple of weeks. EQing vocals for 23 kids has been the bane of my existence, but right after I finished the last show (last May), I discovered your video. I saved it and am prepping for the new show now. You make it look simple! I'm praying it is!

Hey Jordan I was wondering if there are any Free recording studios or apps that are any good ,that you could recommend for me thanks.
@creativegeenyus18193 жыл бұрын
If u have an Apple device, smart device or laptop/desktop, there's GB(Garage Band) for free. Apple automatically sells their devices now with GB been doing so for 5-6 years now. Whether u are on a mobile or pc there's another free DAW called Bandlab, website or app, you're able to record nd produce, whether u home on ur computer u able to work or on the go usin ya phone u def can work. Bandlab has been around for 5 years now but def check it out, slowly but surely there are tutorials on this daw as there aren't as many because like any daw u need to know how to operate it's functions of the plugins nd it's widely known but not ppl are putting tutorials out on it. Either way Bandlab is a good start out DAW for that studio quality or close to it studio quality u can use still to start out. Yes u can hook up ya midi's and instruments. They even have their own interfaces manufactured by them but that cost money. And u csn use this interface for your computer or phone u just need a certain usb piece to use it. Either way u need a mic and an interface for music production. You can start out with a usb mic but def upgrade to that interface and XLR (which ever brand u choose) for better quality, that's with any DAW of course. Anyway If u don't have an interface, that's cool, u just have to opt to ya phone. All u need is a pair of earbuds wit a mic. Did I mention u can use Bandlab on any phone be it Android or iOS (Apple). But look...There are other free DAWs out there but Bandlab and GB are the main ones that come to mind out there to start out with. Pretty soon there'll be more software like that in the future. I know Joyner Lucas nd this Tech entrepreneur just put this new software out there been working on for 5 years called Tully for mainly independent hiphop artists. I'm sure u heard of it. Either way these two tools are here so it's no full to not get grinding. Definitely try Bandlab if u like it get to work. And use it til u upgrade to an actual paid DAW. Although i feel like GB is up there in the big leagues of the other known software like the ones Jordan uses in his vids. Best of luck though. It's bout time we shift the music industry on a DIY stage of things.

when doing the “search and destroy” tactic, do you do that more than once to take out all bad frequencies? or do you do it only once and take out only the very bad frequencies ?
@Baywood2 жыл бұрын
if you start going crazy with it, your vocal will end up feeling empty. there are fundamental frequencies that normally can be dipped to make a vocal cleaner. check out this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXfQkGOeoZyrn8k

Why does your EQ line slope so tall and the one on mine has a gradual slope?
@Baywood3 жыл бұрын
You need to change the EQ shape. You can do that by changing the shapes that you see right above the EQ. Take another look, you'll see what I mean.
@jonathancardenas52523 жыл бұрын
When sweeping, how do you decide which to get rid of, if you here a couple of bad ones?
@Baywood3 жыл бұрын
Hey! When sweeping you just want to take out the loudest/harshest frequencies. There will be a few bad frequencies that aren't all that loud which you may want to keep just so you're not losing all of the color in the vocal. Keep doing this process and you'll slowly begin to realize by ear which frequencies your brain absolutely hates and which ones are tolerable! :P
@yoursshane3 жыл бұрын
Does this apply for soul/r&b vocals?
@Baywood3 жыл бұрын
Yes, each type of vocal will be different so there isn't necessarily one BEST way to EQ, use your ears until it sounds nice!
@jaymyles41663 жыл бұрын
how did you get the zones to shrink? from covering a wide area to a spike
@Baywood3 жыл бұрын
you can use the numbers at the bottom of the EQ or use the dots to change the width of the fequency point

where can I find the "highs" though??

Bro the question is my cpu system overloaded. And ive been trynna find the answer by digging the videos online but found no help. Do u also encounter this problem? If yes, how do u handle this?

this can happen if your project is especially big, try chaning the I/O buffer size to a higher number. you can also freeze tracks to ease cpu usage

@@Baywood will the i o buffer size effect the latency cauding delay when i want to record vocals? Is it better to increase buffer size to maximum when editing only?
@MoneyRouteRay3 жыл бұрын
What do he mean when he say low quality studio?
@Baywood3 жыл бұрын
I just mean an environment that isn't specifically treated for recording such as a bedroom. The reason I use that "search and destroy" method is because this allows me to remove harsh frequencies that muddy up the vocals. What happens when you're in a bedroom a lot of the frequencies will bounce off of your untreated walls and collide causing problem noise in your mix. This method just helps you to get the cleanest vocal possible! :)
@OfficialSavo2 жыл бұрын
I don't know too much about eq but I do know anything below 100 hz is useless for vocals
@OfficialSavo2 жыл бұрын
Also any adjustments you make should be applied while the whole mix is playing
@Baywood2 жыл бұрын
there is a lot of body and fullness in male vocals around 50hz. I would say 20-30hz is for sure not needed. But it all depends on the voice
