Make it sound real complicated to inspect a vehicle, it's not! Some places take it to extremes that will fail most vehicles! Enjoyed the detailed explanation on MOT test inspection.

most states in the us don't require any inspections. Where i live they just check the light and make sure it doesn't have a rotted exhaust.

If your car failed on a missing dust cap in NI, complain! It is not part of the test. I have two missing and have passed last three times. Not even an advisory - and why would there be? Dust caps have nothing to do with safety. And if they're rude, complain! You're the customer. Actually I would imagine as they have no commercial interest in failing you in NI (unlike on the mainland where garages obviously want to make money) a fair test is more likely. Yeah the test is an annual pain in the ass, but in general I have found that the centre I use (Ards) has been pretty fair.

This guy's full of shit. A mechanic will only spend 5 mins in the interior of the car just to start it, check steering and lights. All the keys of an MOT are underneath the car, Wheel bearings, Emitions test, shocks, brake discs, drop links etc because these are the best things for them to sell you as they're difficult to do at home.
