I am Major Charles Carpenter's daughter and you have done a beautiful job of depicting my Dad and his little Cub plane, Rosie. He actually looked like your animation! Here is one thing to add to the story of the Battle of Arracourt as described in a newspaper clipping from the time: there was an American support crew trapped under a bridge, and my Dad's attacks forced the remaining German tanks to retreat, enabling the trapped crew to escape injury and capture. While restoring the plane, we found two bullet holes in the frame from one of his many exploits. The plane is now completed, flight ready, and will be at the Collings Heritage Museum in Hudson, MA. Next summer Rosie will be presented at the EAA Air Venture in Oshkosh, WI.

My uncle Pete was a tank commander under General Patton during Operation Torch. He too was awarded the Silver Star. My cousin showed it to me many years ago. The story goes, the Germans and French Vichy were approaching with tanks toward a much smaller group of American troops behind his tank. There were two or three other tanks with him at the time behind a small ridge in North Africa. The Germans didn't know there were only four tanks behind the ridge. My uncle Pete and his crew drove their tanks to the top of the ridge and took their shots. Then they backed off behind the ridge and repositioned their tanks a little further down the line behind the ridge. They popped up again on the hill again taking more shots. They outwitted the Germans into thinking they had many more tanks than just a few. He and his crew of tankers helped save a lot of lives behind the line that day. Miss you Uncle Pete. Those guys really were The Greatest Generation.

@simplywonderful4493 жыл бұрын
@@xzqzq Typically, tanks of that era had lighter armor on top of the turret, since the real threat was perceived to come from ground action - troops with bazookas would be at the same level, small arms like rifles wouldn't matter at all. So part of the genius of Major Carpenter was in SEEING this deficiency and capitalizing on it. Tossing a grenade on top would do something similar, but the grenade would roll off the turret before exploding. So the bazooka rockets would be perfect, as would a mortar IF you could reliably hit the tank from the top. Now, we have TOW missiles and such, to attempt to do the same from above by allowing the shooter to also be the "pilot" and guide the missile to not only hit the tank, but choose WHERE ON THE TANK TO HIT IT!

Are you sure the elder generation does not belittle and mock the younger for not having made the same sacrifices, thus deeming then lazy, spoiled and good for nothing? Because that's the tone I get from people alive during this era, that young people are their own problem. Take no heed to the circumstances having vastly changed in 60 years, the elder is always better and instead of trying to help the younger generation we are belittled and mocked for our perceived brattiness. No amount of hard work will ever change that in their eyes, just because we have cell phones in our pockets. Doesn't matter if we work full time jobs, pay our taxes and vote, we still must be lazy.

Such an incredible story. Awesome animations too. Interesting how you chose to do the windscreen as three sections, because the edges were visible in certain scenes... That part about his granddaughter painting the livery was so moving, thank you for such an incredible story that only gets more and more amazing with each coming year.

I had the pleasure of piloting a Piper cub (1940’s era) 2 seater. At 6’2” I had troubled fitting inside the back and my feet were almost too wide to work the rudders. The open cabin and slow speed were magical over the cornfields. Flying low and slow I scared some deer in the field, can’t imagine doing that to some Germans let alone terrorizing them

The animation is getting better and better, though I think the only thing to focus on now is making the soldiers/characters more bulky, they look too bare or "naked" without webbing and equipment on them.

These stories are so inspirational and as an avid history buff I'm ashamed that I didn't know about this! The animation is amazing. I wish i could support on Patreon but I'm a struggling student. However, I will definitely try to ensure more people kniw about this channel! Just a sidenote, the scene where Maj Carpenter was receiving his silver star, it appears that a gold star was animated instead (5:46). Nevertheless, it is a small nitpick.

This legendary war hero is also a legend in terms of taking upgrades to whole new heights. Light scouting plane? I think not, more like highly maneuverable bazooka firing gunship!
@nikolausbautista89254 жыл бұрын
Bazooka Charlie- "The Mad Major," is what it means to be an American- resourceful, and never gives up (even if it means "overkill"!). Of all the brave Allied Pilots of WW2, Lt. Col. Charles Carpenter, was as great as they come. He never spoke of his War Service after, and it was only after his death, that the people and pupils around him, knew what kind of "Hero," that history teacher was.
@nateborck45774 жыл бұрын
As an American I can personally vouch that there is no such thing as overkill with our military. there is simply enough to boom to destroy and enough boom to destroy spectacularly.

Fun fact: the panther tank was the more feared than the tiger 1 beacause the tiger was just a propaganda weapon and it has many design problems like a bad trasmission or a flat frontal armor which can be easily penetrated since 1943 the panther were faster and (for me) it has a better gun and a sloped frontal armor that can resist more shots that the tiger armor with thinner steel plate For course the video was great and i oversimplified the subject if i wrote something wrong then correct me have a nice day

@cristopher wong only problem is the lack of fuel.
@jakobc.25584 жыл бұрын
@cristopher wong less problems? It was so overweight that drivers were instructed to not use neural steering because it would usualy lead to the transmission breaking. This is only one of countless problems like: - Turret is too heavy to rotate on a slope - Still no periscope for the gunner - Still no commanders overwrite (although I have to say that most WW2 tanks except for the M4 Sherman didnt have that feature) - By 1944 german armor quality was effektively wet toilet paper glued together. The armor would shatter after a couple of hits - Ovet 10 tons heavyer then the Tiger 1 (which was already overweight) while just having a slightly better engine leading to a even worse horsepower/ton ratio - Still no commander opperated radio - Very difficult and expensive to produce - No seperate engine for the turret meaning that in order to rotate the turret the engine had to be running and in order to have good turret rotation speed the engine had to be running at max RPM. Not only is this extremely fuel inefficient but it also leads to engine overstressing leading to more breakdowns and it makes ambushing completely impossible because every recon unit in the area can see and hear the running engine from a few kilometers away.

@jakobc.25584 жыл бұрын
The panther had a few problems that you did not seem to know about: By 1944 when the allies invades normandy german factorys were bombed to bits leading to a decrease in german armor quality. Since most tiger 1s were build before that they did not have that problem but the armor on the panther would shatter frequently even after just a couple of HE hits: external-preview.redd.it/sdEXpg78H46ngTHLP5ZY2JJR7s1afG39r1PO0mgy7oU.jpg?auto=webp&s=dffa1dc03e31290a5205567a72e032f8dd7d6df3 i.redd.it/e6z2le1a51x41.jpg worldoftanks.com/dcont/fb/imagesforarticles/chieftains_hatch/pantherscare1/isignypthr.jpg?MEDIA_PREFIX=/dcont/fb/ Also the transmission was still horrible leading to breakdowns every ~150km of driving and the turret rotation speed was reduced on the later moddels because the germans wanted to increase production so they left out the turret motor.
