That’s so awesome. My father turned me on from everything from Beatles, to Dylan, to Zappa and the MOI, to Miles Davis (who he took my mom to see when we were still in Oakland, at the Nighthawk across the Bay.) I can only imagine see Miles and Coltrane on the same stage. I’m lucky to have seen Zappa in 81, and Miles at the Front Row Theater in Cleveland. (And MAN were we underdressed! Stuck out like a sore thumb! I guess everyone decided “Hey, if the kids are cool enough to come see Miles, then who cares if they’re in tee shirts and jeans!” I saw BB, Collins, Bo Diddley, and many others in the maybe 750 seat Agora theater on OSU’s campus. What good times.

I am so lucky to have seen them all live in the early and mid 1980’s. 3 years earlier, Stevie Ray would have been up there too. (Eric said he absolutely dreaded playing after SRV. Only other person I know he said that about was Jimi.) All legends on that stage.

I vividly remember watching this in real time when it aired. I've never seen the video recording since. I decided that night that my favorite performances of the evening were: 1. B.B. 2. Clapton 3. Collins 4. Guy 5. Beck.... Speaking for that night only....not careers or anything like that. I'm going to listen for the first time in nearly 29 years and see if my tastes are the same. I do know one thing, I've developed an ever-increasing appreciation of Beck's music since then.

My tastes really haven't changed, although I can now better put words on why. Mostly it's tone...and melodic relevance to the moment. BB and Clapton had the best tone going that night, in my humble, yet professional opinion. All were great though.

Yep..all of the classic rock blues players tend to overplay That running off at the mouth is standard in rock. Gary Moore was another one. Great player but just a bit too much...too fast. Listen to BB and Albert's Choice of notes and brevity. Petter Green was another one that showed restraint in choice of notes. They all sounded good here. Only BB playing Gibson. Clapton at his best is the best. Beck is the most original.
