one thing that is quite helpful is adding the same stop twice on the list but the second one is set to transfer mode so that when anyone that needs all jobs or services provided at that stop can get out while the rest can wait at the station for their next ride. this is especially good for a large transit hub for a city center and have those civil services and shops staffed first then the as a transfer to industrial districts outside of residential away from pollution.

Well, first - thank you for making this video and explaining this mechanic. It is much clearer now how it can be used to make citizens travel between places - the idea I have now is to have busses from neighbourhoods 'transfer' them to a central location where hopefully they will pick up the next travel option to a destination (like an industrial sector/zone, which I like to build separated from the area where housing is) so now I get that it's possible to use multiple travel options because some testing I did showed that civs will not travel with bus from location A to location B and use another transport option (Bus, tram, train, airplane or ship) to get to location C, even if location C has what they want to satisfy. The same can be said to using a car to travel to any public transportation option and then use that one to reach work or any demand satisfier, so it's impossible to implement P&R like in big cities, which is ok, but could be needed in a big main city with small villages that don't have electronics or clothing, for example... so if a civ has a car, they are basically limited to the travel range of that car and the hope that there is a parking lot within range of that thing they need... I will go test that again, now with the transfer option, because I'm intrigued 😀 Oh - and Thank you for mentioning you found my comment on this a good reason to make a video on it, I'm flattered. And lastly - thank you for making videos like this that help explain the mechanics of the game

What would be helpful is if I could link stops which are close to each other, e.g. like I can link intersections. I want people to transfer off a bus and take the train. I do not want to send all people to the train station, just some of them. Whoever can satisfy his/her need within walking distance of the bus stop, should do so and only those who cannot should be sent to the other station. This is somewhat similar when you try to decide where your workers should go, either from a station or from their home. Either they decide on their own, or you force all of them. You can pick multiple workplaces, but I cannot select 50% to go to the bus stop and leave the other 50% on their own will. This is a feature currently missing.

In good old OTTD this was implemented, but: OTTD has no visual people! I could imagine, that this is much more difficult to code, although I would prefer to get this "linked stations", instead of fancy visual effects like blinking lights on vehicles. ;)

This was a great and clear explanation. Seems like the function is quite useful to setup a hub in a city area that has spoke lines going to different places. It would force people from outskirts to come to the central area and get out where since they'll now reconsider where to go could get on a different line heading to some other specialize outskirt or workplace. When they get out and reconsider can they transfer to other transportation that is within walking distance like a metro or train station?
@JasonNoble
@JasonNoble Жыл бұрын
Just to follow up on your question, in the kind of hub-and-spoke setup you describe, I think we would want the _spoke_ stations to be set up as transfer stations, and not the hub, right? To force people to get on the bus at their suburban spoke station, then get off at the hub station and catch a second form of transport. But that second bus they will naturally want to get on because it is taking them to a shop or a pub or a pool or whatever relevant need they have. I think! I might well have this the wrong way around so clarifications very welcome.

Love you videos, they are clear, detailed, but not long winded. Got a question for you regarding busses. We have a worker who gets on a bus, there's a bus stop directly outside the place he will work at, BUT there is also a bus stop in between that just happens to be within walking range of the workplace. Does the worker get off at the first stop and walk the rest of the way, or is he smart enough to know that saying on the bus for another stop will get him closer to his destination? the reason I am asking is if he waits for the stop closer to the destination then it makes sense to place many bus stops in your city, but if he is inclined to get of as soon as he in with walking range then it would make sense not to put too many stops in you city as that increases the chance of workers getting off busses and walking the majority off the journey which is slower.
@bballjo
@bballjo 6 ай бұрын
They ignore distance...it's all about supply and demand. They get on the bus because there is something on the line that they want (here:work), and if they can satisfy that demand, they will get off.
@eamonnfanton2165
@eamonnfanton2165 6 ай бұрын
@@bballjo So, just to be clear, are you saying they will get of at the stop BEFORE the workplace bus stop because they are capable of walking the rest of the journey from a previous stop? This would be the logical conclusion of what you explained but from a city planning perspective not ideal as you want your citizens getting from A to B as quickly as possible.
@bballjo
@bballjo 6 ай бұрын
Yes that's what I'm saying. 2 bus stops in catchment of 1 industry are still a good thing, because as I explained before they will get off if they can find work, but it's likely that at the first stop all workspaces are filled, yet in the time it takes to get to the next stop there may be vacancies again at the same industry, so having multiple stops can help with staffing.

Thanks for replying to my questions so fast. I see what you are saying. Was planning to spam bustops everywhere (every 100 metres or so) before I watched your video, but if workers are going to get off at the first stop where they can continue to walk to work then I will not waste resources building so many. I think a bus stop covering every 200m radius area is probably the smartest way to do it

I had a bus stop next to a metro station. That bus stop has an order to send workers to the metro. I then have a bus that goes to a village, picks up workers, and orders them to unload at the bus stop. Nothing happens, no one got on the bus. I then used the force transfer option, now people crowd into the bus. BUT, when they arrive at the platform no one gets off! I can't get anyone to get off the bus. The metro is shown to be just a 100m walk from the bus stop. It's the metro without an integrated entrance though, are they too dumb to use the tunnel entrances or something?

Eg, I have a city with everything in walking range. My bus stop is only for workers to get to industry district. If I build a new housing district without jobs and amenities and force everyone to the central bus stop (workers, passengers, students) can they actually get off or are they also forbidden to wait at the station like the ones in walking distance?

Despite free seats on the bus some students and some passengers were left at the station. The passengers left had a desire for religion - that can't be fullfilled at all in my republic. Maybe then even the transfer option will be overwritten? But I don't get why some students were left behind.

Also loyality is considered. My students didn't met the loyality threshold for the university, so they weren't picked up. The Moment I decreased the loyality threshold, they entered the bus. It is also some kind of "capacity", but not as obvious. I mean it is ok, that they don't get on the bus, if there needs are not fullfilled. Thanks for another great guide. The case I find where this would be useful is when you'd design your industry in such way that you'd have a purely worker bus (/tram etc.) line going from your city through your industries and ending at a stop that requires massive amount of workers. Basically a line "From here to here, here... and dump the rest of workers here and repeat". I wish the devs would add conditional stops - if a vehicle is already empty (or full) and its next stop is unload (or load respectively), skip it. Imagine a worker bus line, where as soon as you unloaded the last worker, the bus would skip all the stops in the industry area and go back to the city for another "load" of workers and if it already got full on the first stop, it'd skip all the rest of the stops in the city and go straight to the industry. This would also open up many possible cargo logistics schemes...

Hi, Bballjo, so basically transfer hubs DO work if I understand correctly? If you set up a line with only 1 transfer stop on it, the game will simply force everyone out on that stop and "allow" only peeps with availability of working/need fullfilling somewhere along the original line; so you may build a drinking district stop and every boozelover will need to go there via bus and won´t be crawling in the city (and he WILL take the bus eventually?). If heard correctly: - the transfer stop will FIRST try to accomodate everyone and force them to first vehicle in any direction they desire and only THEN it will push then out to businesses (and other stops around), or any people on the bus will immediately go fullfilling their needs in the vicinity of transfer stop WITHOUT trying to wait for a bus for next 1 hour? And also it is worth to build transfer stops the way you only unload at that one, go around to "only load" stop and pick passengers up there to avoid picking same guys on again?
@bballjo
@bballjo Жыл бұрын
If you use the transfer option, they wait for an hour, just like they would if they would walk to the same station...once they are at the station they either get on a bus or after 1 hour they will leave the station...so it's not as simple as you described, but yes it's possible I believe...stay tuned;)

The walking distance to the station makes no difference, it's either in range or it isn't, very binary really...what matters is if it was in walking distance from previous location (residential, shop, sport l, culture etc) and if it was in walking distance,big there was space available at that specific time.

I am not talking about the small bus platform in the city where the citizens start their journey. I was talking about the bus station where they are supposed to "transfer", the one that only has another bus station in walking range. So the question is rather: Does the transfer option unload specifically to the station/platform and not let people walk to their actual needs or does it unload like a normal stop in the line but it also forces all people out no matter if they want or not? (In addition to the initial pull factor of "yes, I will satisfy your needs") Because from the name of the option, the first sounds more reasonable but from a usability point of view, the later is probably more helpful.
@afr11235
@afr11235 Жыл бұрын
In my experience, when you force workers off at a stop with the transfer function they will get on the next bus which 1) allows loading and 2) has a destination they may want. If no bus comes that satisfies 1 and 2, after one hour waiting timer they will look for demand in walking distance, else teleport home. If, for example, you are trying to keep an industry full, you can put another bus stop in walking distance with no service, to extend the time they wait for open work (as they will just bounce between stops every hour if no work open or bus comes)
@bballjo

in this very case you have to set two stops for the said bus stop (one after another) - one that will be the standard unload and another one for the transfer. In such a setup, the bus will firstly unload all the passengers/workers that see any free buildings able to fulfill their needs and then it will dump everyone else (and they will wait for an hour before they will check if there is anything worth walking to in the distance). It can be handy for various power plants and other critical industries - it's good to have some redundant workers that will wait for an hour and then walk to work. If you are into micromanaging (I'm not - basically for such a setup you need few "different" lines that skips or transfer to different stops), you can even provide constant supply of workers for your industry using this one-hour delay and few bus stops. Oh, also avoid using "load" option for your stops. If bus has no passengers and only "unload" stops left, it will cut it's route earlier. Moreover, you want to provide some emergency supply of workers for your critical industries - buses randomly picking up and dumping your workers everywhere and anywhere really get in the way.
