How wonderful it is to hear this service from 1968. A fitting testament to our great choirmaster Allan Wicks. The diction is so clear and the intonation is top notch......and I was the treble soloist in the anthem 'Valiant for truth' and have never heard this recording until today. We were so privileged to sing in this beautiful building.

Thank you for another glorious post. I was merely sixteen years-of-age when this recording was made, and living in Ramsgate, a town merely twenty miles from Canterbury. Consequently I used to spend my pocket-money, taking the train through to Canterbury at every opportunity.......and not to go shopping: but to visit one of the most glorious cathedrals in England. The central tower has to be the most beautiful in Christendom, whilst the glass around the Trinity Chapel is second to none. I thoroughly approved of the re-ordering of the liturgical Quire, under Dean Victor De Waal, in order to give the great metropolitical 'Chair of Augustine' more prominence. It is, after all, the 'kathedra' which provides the raison d'être for this beautiful building. Today, it is far too expensive to, even, enter the precincts of the Cathedral: the tables of the money-changers are at the gate! What is even worse is that - whilst visiting - a cathedral cleric frequently clambers up into the pulpit to "offer prayer", despite everyone having paid to enter the 'museum'. This never happens at the V&A or Kelvingrove!

I dunno; if you listen to stuff from a few years earlier it was a lot more prominent. By the mid-70s it had all but vanished.

It's and and shall; a few years earlier they'd have sung end and shell
