There's an immense spiritual power to this broadcast, especially in Tranchell's Psalm 103. Rare indeed, these days. Absolutely sublime.

I was 16 years old when I listened to this broadcast, crudely taping onto a cassette. At the time I literally had no idea what I was actually listening to; no knowledge of choral music what so ever. All I knew was that The St Paul’s Service simply took my breath away and began an abiding fascination with English choral music. After nearly forty years, I never thought I’d hear this recording again. Thank you for putting it up.

You're welcome! It's certainly a breathtaking performance. We are uploading a lot of Howells' music in the run-up to his 125th Anniversary in October 2017.

Every one of Howell's Evening Services are stupendous, but if I had to choose one, this would be it, especially sung in this place by that choir. And a big shout-out to Chris Dearnley for the immaculate organ playing.

Have I just heard the most wonderful rendition of the St. Paul's Service ever? So whole-hearted on the part of director, organist and choir...I have been enjoying the uploads on "Archives Of Sound" and I expected this to be up to Barry Rose's usual superlative standards and I certainly wasn't disappointed! As for the anthem, well, Byrd at his most vintage!

Shame that Barry Rose left all beauty and subtlety at Guildford.
