Funny thing was that Finns were extremely shamed about Lordi representing Finland on eurovision 2006. Most even said that they won't watch eurovision and also said that Eurovision is a song contest not a costume party. But if you go ask now, everyone was proud of this moment... Interesting how quickly people change their mind.

We finns voted Lordi to be our country's entry by a landslide. So don't generalize and make it seem like all finns were ashamed. We were not, it was just a small group who just made a lot of noise.

I was a kid back in 2006 and for me it was more of a "Oh no, Lordi is so cool, please don't send them into that lame song contest, they won't get it, they're gonna laugh at them, I don't want to see that" lmao. I kada nam je god neko dao poene, on je mrmljao, cerekao se, glupe komentare davao. Na kraju pjesme je rekao nešto u fazonu moguće je da će pobijediti i kada smo prilikom glasanja, negdje oko sredine, bili PRVI, promrmljao je “jesam li vam rekao da će Bosna pobijediti”. Strašno. Thanks, it is now my best subject right next to Finnish. And it's all mom's fault, my sister and I watched her shows with her, they were in English, so we heard the language before we knew any of it, which helped a lot.

MagdaH97 It was also one of my absolute favourite subjects throughout primary school and the gymnasium :) And yeah, it's the same here in Denmark, subtitles, subtitles, subtitles :P But it does help a lot having English-language shows broadcast with the original English speech and subtitles in one's native language instead of just having a voice-over taking over and speeking in your native language.

Yes, I'm afraid you don't understand the difference between irony and sarcasm - something which you share with many non-native English speakers and many Americans. In his commentaries, Sir Terry was sarcastic in a very light-hearted way which dovetailed very well with the British sense of humour and it was the British public that his commentaries were aimed at. The truth is he loved the Eurovision. He was not intentionally rude and in no way ironic.

Finland was the true winner this year, but Romania was also really good! As a swede i like this commentator, but I have heard Edward of Silén several years commenting the Swedish esc and he is really mean sometimes when presenting the songs so maybe the rudeness does not bother me as mutch... although, Edward would never talk during the song.. that is just simple rude.
