Railway systems throughout the world are falling into disrepair, and this 1993 documentary looks at three different countries and the state of their railways. Argentina's rail system is in tatters following decades of neglect and corruption; Japan's railways are the envy of the world due to extensive government funding; and Los Angeles is now building railways where 30 years ago they were ripped up, but many people are refusing to abandon their cars.

The trams are coming back to the cities in a big way.In the UK many of our large cities are getting the tram back after 40 years.Charleoi in Belgium removed most of it's tram network in 1987,now they are in the process of putting them back in! For short trips trams are ideal but they need to be frequent and cheap (or even better free,which is possible to provide with an out of town park and ride scheme where the price of the parking ticket pays for the tram service,though this seems to be too complex for most greed mongers to understand)

In the US money seems to rule everything. Financial interests took away one of the best rapid urban transport systems in the world, the Los Angeles streetcars and replaced it with stinking automobiles (for those who could afford them). Lamentable USA!
