Tbh it might be worth them looking at training for any new intake and followed up like a timed event after of fake Phishing scams as a right of passage to get bank auth privileges? Corps i've worked in have tended to do this. Social engineering is the biggest/easiest "hack/scam" you can do.

Doesn’t matter, worked in IT for years and people are morons. They just don’t pay attention - As shown, EVEN when Barclay’s warn them. I had a customer scammed 3 times in one month. Id have a zero tolerance policy on this - sacked. Treat company money like its your own.

In addition to all the other excellent suggestions regarding how to avoid scammers, how about something simple like a word of the week? You decide on Monday morning what that week's word will be (eg. giraffe) and that word is communicated to all necessary staff, then they can challenge any "internal" communications by asking for the word. Sort of a riff on the old sentry challenge in the army.

You need to hire a security team to investigate where the e-mail came from and where the funds went. I'm in the industry and can tell you there's a high chance (bigger than 50%) that they will be able to trace this if worked on with Police. Do it and get your money back otherwise they'll try again. It won't cost you alot.

You Should have 2 People that Should be involved with Payment ,And a Call from the Bank was a Big Warning !!!! There was a Problem, and Should have Waited for Conformation From You Daniel, Which Obviously you Could See a Big issue Immediately ,And Could have Waited for the Next Day, Stalling,and Questions Should have been Asked About What the invoice was for Materials or Service Provided 😢 Terry Should have been involved and is old school in Ashville Like you, Good Luck and Take Advice From one of the Posted Comments About Recovery, Some good news About Some of the Money the Bank was Returning 👍

I think this is the second time he is suffering this. I seem to remember Ashville getting an email to pay some balance from a seemingly genuine root domain email of their supplier, they were saved by confirming with the business. Probably same guy or team and likely knows them well.

You need to set-up a secondary authorising process/sign off limits. So, your finance officer can authorise up to a certain limit and after it will need you/Terry for final approval. This works well in the public sector to prevent similar type of issues. Hope you can track it down 🤞

Our company send phishing emails as tests to see who clicks links, or who reports them. If you report them correctly it tells you. This does slowly start to stop people from clicking links without doing checks. But ultimately we use Teams.

I have a plant hire business in Lincolnshire and I had a digger and a dumper stolen on March the 1st I wasn’t insured so I also lost £20k recently, it sent me into a depression I am only just coming out of I feel your pain

We do plant hire and if someone doesn’t have hired-in plant insurance we take a 15% premium off them, put it in an account and don’t touch it. It soon adds up and it’s sat there in case of such an incident. It’s like an insurance for us, and encourages people to get the insurance.

DMARC Daniel! Your email domain hasn’t got DMARC email spoofing protection enabled. It’s a free, easy, industry standard, and will go a long way in protecting against spoofing.

The measures to put in place to not happen again could be: Training on Phishin, 'ishing and smishin. Next could be a codeword (in white text on emails) over x amounts. and further to that over X amount, a second member of staff or even 3rd senior member is needed to authorise it as it goes through the chain of command. Would you rather the payments are a little slower, or losing another 20k? EDIT: if the bank asks for clarification is it fraud. That member of staff or any staff should seek further guidance from line Manager or senior level. Also. don't maybe let new staff handle over certain amounts for a few months. Train staff on your sign off emails, so to look for fraud.. just a few ideas. hope something sticks.

And add a policy that no payment is to be made without direct reference to an invoice that has been cross-referenced to a documented order and or to the bank account that differs from what is stated on the invoice unless there's a signed paper authorisation by one of the CxOs. That very simple policy catches 99% of phishing cases.

I would suggest that email SPF, DKIM and DMARC records are set up and correct. Also, add a mark to all mail coming from external so it's easier to spot.

This is a Push payment authority scam. We lost £5000. Lloyds refused to reimburse use because as you did we authorised it. We went to financial regulator who told Lloyds to pay it back and they did. Worth a go.

Suggestion: We use an internal system for any payments rather than emails and also most emails have an anti phishing code to prevent any email scams. Great video and hard work as always. Keep it up

Id say youd be kept busy in that yard. Always something going on. Looks like logistical fun more than work. You have to look at email addresses, especially with those invoice email phishing scams, i get them in work all the time, and theyre so easy to spot. Always always look who the sender was.

This happens to a lot of small/medium companies they try and find the weakness. Nearly happened to a company I worked for with 18 employees 6 years ago. The exact same style of faked email with information about the boss being away on business from a hacked email account.

Regarding the money that was lost, there is only ONE thing that needed to be done which would have prevented it from happening and that is 'communication'. Daniel was aware of these fake/scam emails coming in way before the new employee started and therefore he should have made it clear to the new employee that the company has been receiving scam emails. Daniel should have made the new employee aware of the difference in the emails headers being used and to look out for them. It seems to me none of this was done because in the video Daniel say's the bank rang up the company to ask if the payment was fraud and the employee said no. This implies that the employee was not aware of the ongoing scams hitting the company because if they was informed they would have told the bank to hold off paying until he/she could get confirmation from Daniel. Communication, communication and more communication. Never underestimate how important communication is.

Just something to think about Daniel while you are doing that drainage job. I had the same problem on a build project, when you dig the big pit and fill it full of soak away stone it attracts water like you would not believe. Removing compact soil and replacing it with air pocketed stone is like a magnet to water flow. The bigger the hole the more it fills up. I wonder if you put in a plan B for water clearance in the form of a hidden floatation pump. Just a thought if your ground puriosity soak away test is poor. It could just be your top surface collecting water if so it will all be fine. I hope you don't mind my input I don't want you getting call backs.

On payments a text to the authoriser to confirm they really did originate the payment email or letter would do, the authoriser could send the text along with the email and kind of pre verify if speed is important - over a certain amount or in circumstances you don’t tell us about

Scammers need to start working for a living. If you use office 365 get whoever does your IT do add an external email banner on emails. It will flag that the sender was not from your organisation. I know you love free advice!
