It's December 1981 and Kenneth Kendall, Michael Buerk and Brian Hanrahan bring us news of martial law in Poland and the big freeze in the UK. We've edited out the filmed inserts to just leave the studio material (with the exception of some shots of "Britain's newest commuter train fleet", which 30 years later is still running on the same lines).

I must say I'm impressed by their (the reporters) pronunciation of Polish names - Lech Wałęsa (Leh Vawensa) in particular , well done :)

The BBC have always been careful to get them right with their special pronunciation unit.

@@ajs41 *had. The pronunciation Unit was closed when John Birt's cuts closed it down in the early 90s.

In 2:08 Buerk pronounces name _Jaruzelski_ correctly (with _y_ as in yard) and then he does it wrong in 3:02 (with _j_ as in joke).

Kenneth Kendall missed his planned last news bulletin due to an injury he received due to the bad weather of this winter. This would, as others have mentioned, been one of his last. Later, of course, he appeared on "Treasure Hunt".

My first car froze that winter.... Japanese cars were not designed for Scottish winters. Never forget the cold in Glasgow that winter, reached -25C

I was in my first year in University. In Poland of course. I remember single second of this madness. But sometimes there was a moments taken out from stand'up commedies. If you like to read I'll write it 4 U.

The Kenneth Ken| issue shows how binary things used to be. Nowadays, with most continuity recorded (alas, alas) it's more likely that an announcement would plough on anyway, as often seen on satellite channels where programmes don't fit the slot allocated for announcements, ruining the denouement of several comedy and drama shows we've seen.

Jaruzelski acted so that the Red Army wouldn't be the ones doing it. I was 1 week short of my 1st birthday. I and my family couldn't leave the country until 1984.

I was just about to turn 9 and I remember that they cancelled "Teleranek" which was a popular Sunday morning cartoons for kids in those days - and I was so pissed off about that ... ! lol ;) I had no idea really of the troubles the 'grown ups' had to deal with ... ;)

Gotta love the announcer slightly mistiming his announcement and getting cut off at "Kenneth Ken...". And then Michael Buerk getting Lech Wałęsa's unpronounceable name wrong, as famously parodied by Not The Nine O'Clock News. Bless!
