This long section on Brazil as an emergent perfume empire has been making me smile so big here from the year of 2024, where one of the most hotly desired American skincare and fragrance brands is Sol de Janeiro, reigning champion of Brazilian-inspired fruity and candy fragrances. Founded in 2015! Amazing.

Something I did not hear addressed in any of the 3 parts is how scent can vary when applied to two different persons. My sister and I can wear the same perfume, and it will smell totally different on her and I.
@007KayElleKay
@007KayElleKay 4 жыл бұрын
Theres no reason why this should be so - its nothing to do with the stability of the chemicals in a fragrance and everything to do with individual perception of smell. I can tell what fragrance a person is wearing because my nose is trained to pick out fragrance and the chemicals involved in its composition. Your sister and you will smell exactly the same to me and many other people if you are wearing the same fragrance, you just perceive that you smell different -sorry.

I agree with you, not the other poster. EVERYONE has a different body chemistry and scents really can smell completely different on different people.

I was thinking the same thing. Happened to me a few times with several different fragrances. One notable one, years ago a perfume came out that was very popular. Smelled wonderful to me when other's were wearing it. But when I put it on it smelled sickly sweet, like Pepsi Cola. To me that says body chemistry.
@wib6044
@wib6044 2 жыл бұрын
@Karyn Gardner actually there are many reasons why they would smell different. Obviously you smelling it on yourself and on someone else is going to be different. But an objective nose smelling the both of them could have different perceptions. If one person drinks alcohol and is releasing acetic acid, taking in excess choline and emitting a fish smell, eating aromatic spices, has more skin bacteria and body odor mixing with the fragrance etc. Or something more obvious like a different soap, will all alter the scent. Even psychological perceptions can change the way a perfume smells on two different people. Imagine an unattractive, rude person, opposed to an extremely attractive and pleasant person.

I have just finished watching this very fine documentary in which I found very interesting specially the part 3 that says that Brazil is the fastest growing perfume market in the world. In fact, I am brazilian, born and raised and I can easily tell that we truly love the pleasant smell. Everywhere you look at, you can see some kind of business involving fragrances. I am a perfume lover who owns a growing perfume collection... I adore my fragrances and I'm not really attached to a olfative family, If something smells good to my nose, I wear despite it's woody or fruity or sickly sweet. Most brazilians - including me - cannot afford expensive fragrances, so most of us purchase fragrances from one of the 3 biggest cosmetic company in the country - Natura, O Boticário and Avon. But once you get to know the french perfumery, you get addicted... so many of people buy ''inspiration perfumes''. These kinds are inspirations from famous perfumes such as Azzaro, Angel, 212, Armani Code and cost way cheaper than the original one... Unfortunatelly high profile fragrances like these I mentioned are way too expensive. For example, a Thierry Mugler Angel EDP Refilable 50ml costs R$ 399 ~U$ 160...and most of brazilians live with no more than U$ 291 a month....

Really enjoyed this complete documentary. It really does show a new perspective on the creation and emotional affect that fragrances have. Especially in Brazil! I had no clue that Brazil and China were the game changers in the perfume industry. I do agree with the Brazilians as I like the fruity sweet scents. I've been expanding my perfume collection within the last few weeks and hope to develop my collection even more so I'm really getting into the whole "I want my body to have a personal elegant aroma". I'm so excited to continue with this journey. I hope I find my signature scent real soon! Thank you for this upload.

Interesting 3 part documentary. I enjoyed watching it. I understand in this closing segment the importance of marketing and having high population countries like China, India, etc. drive a market. However, I think like most true fragrance enthusiasts, I will purchase and wear what I find pleasurable not what is popular. To each his own I suppose.

Amazing those 3 parts of that fragrance/perfumeurs documentary series, THANK YOU, for sharing this with us!! I dont knowed this documentary series, apreiate it a lot, that i found you and your great sharings!! :** ....SO inspiring, impressing to see this perfumeur icons seeing in their element, never saw such an in depth and detail documentary about fragrances and especially not of their star perfumeurs!! I LOVE the house Guerlain, their perfumes, have every single perfume of them, also their privat line (the more expensive one), but my absolutely champs are anyways still, mon Guerlain and Shalimar, all versions of them!:)) Of course i also love several Chanel, Dior, etc, etc, etc; fragrances and also love this iconic brands, but Guerlain and their history, Tierry Wasser, is one of our biggest, best and most talented parfumeurs of our time, just love his story and the relationship between him and Mr. Guerlain senior, for him fragrances and everything whats in this topic, is his hole life (sad, but also very impressing), more than his passion, its just his life! Ps And i dont give a .... about it, what Mr Guerlain senior said, he is an old man and of course its sucks, but that this icon the is really old and in his youth it wasnt as today, that he got this amount on hate, bulling, etc, etc; is just disgusting for me, nobody deserve such an backflash bcs of such an mistake, they should spend their energy in psychos like Donald Trump, who are just dangerous for the hole world and more, but of course they dont act like that......^^ ^^ so yeah, anyways... GREAT VIDEO/DOCUMENTARY SERIE!!! :** glG from austria, katharina :*

Scents have to be regional, in this age of internet, because it'd be easy for consumers to RESELL the cheap crappy fragrances at large profits to another country (that loves them), undercuttting the manufacturer's outlets there. Fragrance makers don't want to compete with scents they've unloaded elsewhere for a pittance. Just saying.

Also a problem when you have designers trying to sell their fragrance only to certain markets and it will be a failure, because the new uneducated designers do not read about the people only they see the mass of people. Instead of making a fragrance for the skin tones which will give everyone in the world a great feeling.

I think Widian are a criminally underappreciated house. The only criticism I have rides in on a terrific compliment, so it's bittersweet: their fragrances are incredibly well calibrated, just so beautifully blended. There's an extraordinary harmony where no note screeches over the gorgeous, enveloping hum of the choir. HOWEVER, there's no volume. And the choir disperses before I'm ready to stop enjoying them! I wish Widian would fix this wishy-washy performance as I find this a genuine issue with their fragrance quality. I can't even call them 'skin scents'. They just...evaporate after making me strain to hear the glorious melody. I resent this. If they could pump up the volume and increase the tenacity, Widian would grow to become a formidable, classic-- dare I say it-- legendary house, I'm sure of it. But until then...😞

I have noticed that people In the comments think that the Marketing approach taken by these companies are bad, I find this to be a bit ignorant! Although the goal of these campaigns is to Sell, the benefit for the users are still there! They are giving the consumers exactly what they want! Some of you are laughing about Axe and fabric fragrances which I think is Ignorant as well! These might be the only way for some people to come in contact with a pleasant secent! Fragrances are not only for the rich! It is not a class divider, our taste is formed based on our experiences! Let us not judge and categories in order to feel a bit better about ourselves!

The first test group did not give her what she wanted, so answer to the problem is to find a new set of test group and get the answer you want... What if the test group was not independent but was brought in to agree, Funny how not one disliked it... Also, to make scents to please a specific region is dumb and this is why they do not make good smelling perfume. People want to smell good and all smells would work around the world as everyone has different taste and some do like fruit, brash, strong, weak smells… I hope they changed this practice just like many car Co. had accountants make cars, and they wear boring and awful until some companies got smart and let engineers run the process so the cars became fun to drive and look at... So it is that perfume companies need to not let a marketing idiot run the development of a new perfume but just manage the selling of it...
