The BBC newsreader George Alagiah has died at the age of 67 after being diagnosed with bowel cancer nine years ago. One of the BBC’s best-known journalists, he presented the BBC News at Six for two decades, having previously had a lengthy career as a foreign correspondent.

Clive Myrie told BBC One O'Clock News viewers: 'We loved him here at BBC News and I loved him as a mentor, colleague and friend.' Another one of Alagiah's colleagues, Naga Munchetty, broke down in tears while live on air reporting the news of his death. Speaking to listeners of her 5 Live show, she said: 'Apologies for the emotion in my voice - he was so loved in our newsroom.'

His son and my daughter were at Oxford together and we met as proud Dad's on the induction day. He was Charm personified - it's true, the greatest comment anyone can pay is to say he was human with immense empathy and love for humanity. Rest in peace sir!

This makes you want to reach in to your television or radio and give Clive and Naga a big comforting hug as some kind of small consolation for the loss of their friend and coleague. Viewers obviously liked George Alagaiah but we never really got to know him personally like you would in an office or news room like proper work mates do. It seems like such a small comfort to say rest in peace George. But that's all most of us can do.

Dreadful the most horrendous 💔 news 😢❤ poor George! I don't know how Clive managed at all to pay tribute to his colleague and dear friend on national television. His professionalism really stood out. I couldn't do it without crying. Poor Clive too bless him he handed it very well even though he was struggling with speaking.😢 a very moving beautiful tribute from Clive to his dear friend George.
