A celebration of the Golden Age of Hollywood film musicals featuring Annalene Beechey, Charles Castronovo, Matthew Ford, Sarah Fox, Caroline O'Connor, Clare Teal, the Maida Vale Singers, John Wilson Orchestra and John Wilson (conductor).
The appearances of John Wilson and his hand-picked, high-octane orchestra have been among the most sensational Proms events of recent years.
Joined by a formidable line-up of today's vocal stars, they give what one critic has described as 'the auditory equivalent of a steam-clean' to another cache of show-stoppers.
'Hooray for Hollywood' takes us from the dawn of the talkies and the birth of the movie musical through to the 1960s. An extended sequence pays special tribute to the RKO films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, who was born 100 years ago.
Recorded on 29 August 2011
Broadcast on BBC2 on 3 September

@@Joealmanya Actually, 'There's No Business Like Show Business', was indeed from Annie Get Your Gun, but that was produced by Metro in 1950, not 1946. And the orchestration they used in this 2011 show, was from the 1954 20th Century Fox Production "There's No Business Like Show Business" with Ethel Merman, Marilyn Monroe, Mitzi Gaynor, Dan Dailey and Donald O'Connor.

Yes, the raw material is great. But let no one underestimate the quality of this presentation. This is an orchestra under perfectionist discipline, yet performing with spirit and joy. And yes, John Wilson is a stylish performer up there, but much greater credit goes to him for crafting this outstanding orchestra.

We are so lucky to have John Wilson’s dedicated genius, the incredibly talented players of his orchestra and his star singers and choir to bring back to life the golden age of Hollywood with modern recording techniques. It heartens me that I am not the last person left alive who thrills at this genre of music and that many, many others find their way here on KZbin and that we share in this across the world, maybe years apart, but brought together by a common appreciation of something truly wonderful.

The Man that Got Away is one of my favorite songs of all time, but I can’t sing it without feeling like Judy Garland is in the room, watching me. It’s her song.

It's her song , I dont think her spirit would mind if you sang it.

A lot of these arrangements are the originals from the films, especially the songs from the Warner collection. So wonderful! 🎶👏🏼

3:39 My beautiful mom died at age 95 in 2018. "Indian Love Call" was one of her favorite songs. As a boy, we would sit together and watch the old movie musicals that sometimes were shown locally on Saturday afternoons. I started learning trumpet in the 5th grade and played all the way through college. Also self taught on the piano, and was part of of our chorus in high school and college. Maybe those times spent with mom on those Saturday afternoons had something to do with that. ♥️ And I love the John Wilson orchestra!

When I was in Highschool, I had a problem .... My English was not to good, until my teacher announced to the class, that whoever would sing the National Anthem in front of the class, would get an A rating for the last term! And so I did, sing the 'God save the Queen'(1977) in front of the whole class and I could finish my exams on time! Thank you Mr. Walrecht for not letting me down! Joost from Holland!

Oh my! This music reminds me so much of the Variety Hour performances we did in high school during the mid 50’s, directed by Bill Moeller. Such great memories.

The soloist who sang the Cornelius Hackle part, (Put on Your Sunday Clothes) is Stuart Matthew Price. It took me a while to find out who he is, and I think he deserves credit for the excellent performance.

Though "You'll Never Know" (33:34) was featured in the film "Four Jills in a Jeep", the song is more well-known from the 1943 film, "Hello, Frisco, Hello", sung by Alice Faye as well, which I recommend viewing.

That Charles Castronovo channels Mario Lanza to an eerie degree. Not usually a big operetta fan, but what a gorgeous voice!
