When i was in college 1974 to 77 and radio 1 was in stereo because of radios 1 and 2 being together. Radio 1 did eventually end up in stereo on 97-99 on FM.

@RetroRadioUK thanks for the reply. I don't remember it as David's Daily Dolly (long time ago) but I remember the song 'kept young and beautiful if you want to be loved' I think it was in the afternoons. Thankfully it wasn't un PC then. I love it :)

That news jingle at 0:31 was still being used up until 1989

Here is a question for RetroRadioUK and fellow anoraks with long memories of radio... Listening to these David Hamilton shows on both Radio One and Two is shocking because I remember it like it was last week and yet it was over 40 years ago! In this video David Hamilton like so many before him and since went from Radio One to Radio Two. Nowadays people like Scot Mills seem to be able to present different shows work on both stations. I remember Simon Bates on Radio Two, both on the early show and standing in for Wogan. Is Bates the only DJ to have made the move in the opposite direction and go from Radio 2 to Radio 1?

Diddy David Hamilton juggling himself with his DJ work at BBC Radio 1 and 2 and being an announcer with Thames Television 1968-80 with his evening slot.

+Irene H I remember "David's Daily Dolly" on the David Hamilton Show - introduced with a quick burst of the Moments singing "Dolly My Love" every day - which would probably be deemed very un PC these days! :)

Radios One and two are nothing like the mid 1970s with David Hamilton
@arthurvasey4 жыл бұрын
The change David mentioned resulted in David’s show going out on Radio 2 and Tony Blackburn took the afternoon show on Radio 1!

@@ianmclaughlan Yes - he gave listeners advance warning of the change, which occurred from around 1978 onwards - although Tony Blackburn felt that he, doing the afternoon show on Radio 1 at the same time, felt like he was being put in direct competition with his old friend David Hamilton on Radio 2! Mind you, if their different tastes in music - or music policy on each station - complemented each other, it’s hardly competition - if Tony was playing lots of soul and disco on Radio 1 and David the more melodious tunes on Radio 2, it’s hardly “direct competition!”. David also made a few predictions without realising - he mentioned Radio 5, despite it being nonexistent and not even thought of and that Tony might end up on Radio 2!

Makes me wonder when David dropped the Doobie Brothers 'Listen to the Music' as his opening theme.
@RetroRadioUK10 жыл бұрын
Interesting - I remember hearing that once at the start of the show... but not as a regular opening theme... but I only became a listener from the summer of '76...

Yeah - one of the Radio 1 DJs from the early to mid '70s which meant he was also on the rota to present Top of the Pops up until the end of 1976. Sorry, I've not got any of Ed's Junior Choice shows

+RetroRadioUK Wasn't it more or less the norm for the older Radio One djs to then move to Radio 2 when they weren't quite so "hip" ?. Thanks for posting this by the way; as a 70s teenager I was looking for the "teatime" jingle, to prove my bet that it was 3 o'clock, despite the original old song stating 4 !.
@RockinRedRover8 жыл бұрын
+RockinRedRover Oops, think I misunderstood Andrew's query. As a lifelong BBC Radio listener, but mainly Radio 2 even as a kid, I also didnt realise Radio 1 had to wait so late (1987!! ) for it's daily FM slot, hence until then it had to share the Radio 2 frequency for a few hours on weekends only. Very surprising that !, thanks Wiki for explaining it all.

Hello. I'm trying to find a copy of the Sara Cox show on radio 2, ' sounds of the 80's ... it aired on December 7th 2013 and was the one with Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet interviewed. Sara played a dedication to my wife and I am desperate to hear it again. .. please any ideas ??

Amazed that Radio 1's medium wave frequency was so poor at this time and it did not have its own VHF frequency.
@chrishulse53056 жыл бұрын
Alan Bain Radio 1 had a low budget from the start and the BBC took too long to realise how popular it had become, eventually money was spent on more powerful transmitters.
@linmanfu9132 жыл бұрын
I read a comment in a book from the 1970s saying that Radio 1 would never need to be on VHF because pop music would not get any benefit from the higher quality broadcast! Even though Radio 4 carried more music then than it does now, it was still an appallingly elitist decision to give the VHF frequencies to Radio 4 rather than Radio 1.
@christopherhulse83852 жыл бұрын
It was on relatively low power compared with after the wavelength changes in 1978, 247m was a poor frequency for a national network, with main transmitters interfering with one another.
