World War I was a railway war. Michael Portillo finds out how the railways helped to precipitate a mechanised war, shaped how it was fought, conveyed millions to the trenches and bore witness to its end. He takes to historic tracks to rediscover the locomotives and wagons of the war that was supposed to end all war and hears the stories of the gallant men and women who used them in life and in death.
Michael's journey begins in England's north east, where he finds out about the brave railwaymen who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Moving south to Oxfordshire, he learns how the manufacturing expertise of the railways turned a crisis into a victory. In Hampshire, Michael meets the proud son of a railwayman who, as a Royal Engineer, taught soldiers to be railwaymen and trained railwaymen to be soldiers. Finally, on the south coast he meets the big guns that turned the tide of war.

Much enjoyed at 4 AM in Bangkok. My grandfather Johnson started working in the coal mines at 9 years old with no education. He was drafted in WW 1 and due to his lack of education gassed to train medics how to care for gas victims. Given lite duty state jobs the rest of his life he died before I was born. My father in the 8TH Air Force spent his time in England. Hopefully this current world curse abates so someday I can visit your land.

Interesting and thought provoking stuff. My gt gt grandad and his three brothers, 2 of whom had been North Eastern Railway employees, volunteered. Only he survived the war, albeit disabled.

His videos are a real education and stimulate our thinking about ourselves. Also remind us of courage and sometimes folly.

Interesting. The Great War of 1914-1945 changed the world forever, and we live with the consequences of that horrific event to this very day.

Least we forget these brave & unselfish men that fought for our freedoms & to keep our country safe especially in these times when we are being invaded & infiltrated by the hundreds of foot soldiers daily from over the channel & now the thousands of merchants of terror coming in from Afghanistan , because believe me they do not come in " peace " , this can all only end badly & the ones that fought for our safe futures will be rolling in their graves ...

Nearly all of these workers, soldiers, and people who sacrificed all for the war effort would be completely against the mass immigration that is being forced on Britain today, they would have seen it as a massive insult that the country they fought to protect is open to all including its enemies and that their grandchildren and great-grandchildren are having their home taken away from them. This goes for the second world war also. This forced immigration on a huge scale is an insult to all the war dead and the thousands of years of British ancestors. They fought Germans in two wars but now give up the country anyway which is also an insult to the German dead. If these brave soldiers could see the UK today would they still fight? or would they be disgusted? If people had known the damage the Labour Party would do they certainly would have never voted for them. Free Britain from occupation by the left wing and their armies of people before our culture and home are destroyed!! If this were happening in the Middle East, in China, in Russia or Africa there would be wars in the streets and calls to stop it!! People have become so ignorant that they are just following whatever the left-wing media tells them to do, they are being told what views to have and Parrott the BBC, it is ridiuculous

Incredible history. What kind of communist dislikes the recounting of determination, perseverance, and patriotism?

The Dreadnoughts did not run with coal but with petroleum heavy fuel.

Wrong. The Queen Elizabeth class ran on fuel oil, the early dreadnoughts on coal.
