I've seen videos of greyscale test signal images putting in an appearances before the transmitter rest period takes place.

Test Card F still used the 1979 until 1986 era BBC2 channel identity typeface because the stencilled TWO logo couldn't be read very well.

I'm not sure there was even a font for it for a couple of years.
