This was from the final weeks that the BBC used the magnetic symbols for the weather forecasts, also the final weeks of the BBC Wales mirror globe & mechanical clock as the following month the COW globe would make it's debut & BBC Wales would finally have a electronically generated clock.

Thank you. I really enjoyed watching that, remembering what was important at the time and how people built sets for tv.

Your closedown announcer for this BBC1 Wales night was Lyn Morgan.

6:33 - The only deviation from the network schedule was here at 8.30 as the network was airing A Question of Sport at this slot, so BBC Wales must have moved it to another slot that week.

An excellent upload. We were served by two regions (well three actually, but we never watched BBC1 South West!) when I was growing up (born in 1966). An early observation when BBC1 West still did their own continuity in the evenings was that the regional news was always read in vision by the announcer whereas on BBC Wales it was always read over a slide. In fact we never saw the announcer in vision on BBC Wales. Occasional links were "in vision" on BBC1 West too. Always wondered why the difference between Wales and West in this regard....

The dying days of the old weather magnetic symbols, much to Michael Fish's relief. He was the weather forecaster who tried putting those symbols up but wouldn't stay on, & angrily had enough.

I didn't know BBC Wales still used a physical clock, not computer generated by 1985! England got that by 1981!
@ajs417 жыл бұрын
England didn't get it until December 1981 and this is January 1985 so not such a big gap really, although I don't know why they didn't adopt the computerised clock in 1981 as you say.

BBC1 England had a electronic time piece from December 1981.

Like Northern Ireland, BBC Wales put their local news at 5.35pm, whereas the rest of the UK had their local news at 6.30pm.

Wasn't Radio Wales' Maureen Staffer a continuity announcer on Teledu Cymru?
@gentsw136 жыл бұрын
I believe Maureen was one of the inVision announcers for TWW.
@gentsw132 жыл бұрын
Ah! Maureen Staffer was on the STAFF as a vision announcer for TWW - Television for Wales and the West of England before the company 'lost' its contract in the late 1960s. HTV took over a few months later.

The first six bars are "The Vice Regal Salute", so could be to honour the Prince of Wales, or it could be to allow the chorus of Hen Wlad fy Nhadau to be fitted in the time slot. Also the only BBC nation in the UK which played its own national anthem, albeit only the chorus. HTV Wales, on the other hand played both anthems as they are usually performed.
