Will all due respect, Mr. Astley, the rickroll only works because of that voice, that hair, that effortless sway, that trench-coat and that catchy tune. And because you embraced it, laughed with us, and you were completely authentic and genuinely talented, you’re now a multi-generation icon and a legend. We literally wouldn’t get this from any other guy.

Rick's deep soulful voice made him sound the opposite of what he was (a pasty red haired boy). When everyone saw him for the first time after hearing his voice on the radio they were like "That is the guy singing that song? " That is the original Rick Roll. Since then its being convinced you're seeing or hearing one thing and then finding out its very different than what you thought is the epitome of a rick roll. That video has become synonymous with having expectations shattered (good or bad).

Rick Astley is such a cool guy and a good sport about the whole Rick Rolling thing. My two favorites: About 10 years ago I'm watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade when this one float stops and out pops Rock Astley singing Never Gonna! He, personally, Rick Rolled the Macy's parade! Back in 2017 the Foo Fighters were playing at a fest or something in Japan and Rick Astley was at the same fest (or playing nearby or something). Dave Grohl had been talking about how Never Gonna and Smells Like Teen Spirit have a similar chord progression. Grohl finds out Astley is there and asks him to come perform with them onstage. Here is that live mashup: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXioYXSfeJKgn5o

I remember when Rick Rolling began. It was quite literally the first thing KZbin was ever really used for. Some of them were funny. It is something kids today have no clue about. I did get Rick Rolled like last year or something cause I was on a strange science binge and there was a video saying that there was an inexplicable noise being emitted from Mars, I think it was, and I was like oh I'm hooked. And it was very faint and you realize....boom you've been Rick Rolled. It honestly made my day cause it took me back to when I was a teenager.

@@lhop6235 No she didn't. That's what Rick Rolling started out as, in the early 2000s.

Haley Calverley yes! I guess most people didn’t know that the prank existed before KZbin.

I got rickrolled from a bulletin on MySpace. Had to restart the computer and everything.

People now only think of it as a joke but in the 80’s the song was a huge worldwide hit. In 25 years time what people think as cool music now will be regarded in the same way!

I probably wouldn't mind all the robo dial calls I get if occasionally one was a rick roll.

I think now that Emma explained that I get the virus my mom got on her phone a ton of years ago. I don't know what link she may have clicked but her screensaver was Rick's face. And you could change it but as soon as you restarted the phone it would be Rick's face again. She ended up hating him and just giving up and letting him be her screensaver LOL
