Its crazy watching her sing this song. She’s not even present, she’s not in that room. She’s miles away in the exact moment she wrote this song about. I’ve never heard such a clear and pinpoint description of an event so much so I can see it. Unbelievable.

As a male this song hits me from multiple directions… My first relationship was 6 years long. Both each others first everything. Met at 16. But, her family was full of alcoholics, I hated booze and drugs. By the time I proposed, she decided she wanted to go live life. Which killed me… until I joined the club. I suddenly realized I was attractive after the years of hearing I was ugly. Eventually started drinking when I joined a band and played shows. That led to the obvious “sex and drugs” part of playing shows. Which leads me to why these lyrics hit in many ways. My ex ended up becoming well known in town and it wasn’t a good reputation. She did many things she still can’t forgive herself for because she was just living in a blur with one “statue” after another… I feel like if I had been open to her drinking and if we went out that may not have happened, but her family is Irish and none of them can just have 1 drink… so idk honestly. I feel bad either way… As for me, I ended up somehow getting myself into a position not only once but twice where unknown to me, a female decided to put something in my drink and another time actually was very random. Girl squirting a water gun saying it’s vodka and there was actually a mix of drugs in it from what I heard. Both these times I was walked/pushed into a car or room and “r worded” while unable to physically get them off me. Having to see and hear very distorted altered reality and I swear I’ll never forget the things they said… “and it hurts between the eyes on this side…” Eventually I was able to get a couple people to believe me and one was my manager who decided he was gonna keep an eye on me after that and if I wasn’t sober enough to write a sentence we agreed on, he would politely separate me and the females. He also got me into rehab a year later when the band split up and I owe him so much for both of those things. Anyways, this song hits hard. Both me and my ex ended up having horrible things happen to us while trying to forget about how much we still loved each other. We’re good friends now. Both have kids. Both sober. But, yeah… this songs always gonna hit hard.

I discovered this album by chance a few years ago. I'm in my 50s and not since my teens have I listened to any album on repeat like this. This particular song and this particular performance is incredible. Captures exactly how she felt. All the musicians compliment each other so well. I'm very fussy about music. This is absolute perfection. To get a glimpse into this moment feels special.

I must say, I enjoy Ex:Re a whole lot more than Daughter. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Daughter, but this project is next level to me. Also the overall mix and master of the record (and live as well) feel way better to me. Elena‘s voice isn’t sounding as if she was singing in a hall a town away while the rest of the band is playing in a cathedral. This is way more intimate also the level of musician ship definitely seems higher in Ex:Re. I‘m happy she went for trying this one.
@plasmac146 жыл бұрын
I was very lucky of being on the first show from Ex:re and as a hardcore fan of Daughter, I'm with you. Most of the songs feel so different yet familiar. It's an awesome proyect.
@danhe136 жыл бұрын
couldn't agree more ... was afraid to say it out loud haha
@anthonysmith7656 жыл бұрын
Can't say I agree, maybe this feels more intimate, but for me, the structure and craftsmanship of the songs in Daughter are what do it for me. I agree they over-produce the sounds in Daughter, but Elena (don't take this the wrong way, I would eat the dirt she walks on) tends to ramble in her lyrics. There has been a shift in her lyric writing on Ex:Re and the last Daughter album that feels lacking. I applaud the uniqueness of her current lyric style and they're definitely still enjoyable, but feels more like the rambling of a young girls diary than the crafted poetry-like lyrics of earlier Daughter works. I miss that level of attention. It's like Elena has gone from quality of thought to quantity of thought. And maybe Igor and Remy kind of reigned in those impulses, where in Ex:Re she has no counter balances. But, hey, music is subjective, just my 2 cents. I still listen to this album heavily though.
@riot.96 жыл бұрын
Agreed about that young girl's diary part. Something bugged me, but I couldn't put my finger on in and you did it.

[Verse 1] And in the night, it was a drunken stutter Started as a next to nothing conversation And then he's tearing me out Taking me apart at my friend's house I was uncomfortable, I was hurt Still with blue innocence in his eyes I felt my reasoning was harsh [Verse 2] With every stab wound and exhale, I promised myself That I would never lose my youthful fears of grown up men I'm scarred with cruel intentions I thought of another the whole time Who would have never stared me like that See, he saw me as a human This one thinks I'm a slaughterhouse [Pre-Chorus] He pretends that he's understanding And you know in the grand scheme of everything He's probably called a nice man Or an ordinary kind of man Or a stereotype with strong hands, I'm so sad At how little joy I realized within my time with my ex guy Before these statues arrived [Chorus] Romance is dead and done And it hits between the eyes on this side The grass is dead and barren And it hurts between my thighs on this side [Verse 3] I could begin to open up and risk desire For I move slower and quieter than most I grew up too quick and I still forgive too slow Oh, I wish there was another way [Chorus] Romance is dead and done And it hits between the eyes on this side The grass is dead and barren And it hurts between my thighs on this side [Bridge] See me here, meet me here I don't care if it's not repeated I want to know who you are For every second we outrun the moon, dread the sun come up I want to know who you are So I don't have to check my stuff's still here when you're gone I want to know who you are I want to know who you were [Chorus] Romance is dead and done And it hits between the eyes on this side The grass is dead and barren And it hurts between my thighs on this side [Outro] This side This side This side This side
