Take heart sisters. I was a maid in Zimbabwe, treated like a donkey, when the madam boss realized I was smart she started getting worried about her husband noticing. I had to leave. On Monday I submitted my Bachelors thesis in another country. I am going to be a teacher and I got employed before finishing my studies. Keep the faith. One day it shall be well.

I'm from Philippines and i can relate the girls situation. I'm also a House girl (Domestic Helper) in Hong Kong my Chinese employer treated like an animal. I only have one meal a day and no proper bed during winter. My female employer always jealous if her husband look at me or talk to me. The pain of being alone and away from home combined with maltreatment, over work and luck of sleep broke my spirit. The egency that brought me to Hong Kong did nothing to help me. I suffered 2 yrs to finished my contract and finally, now im home!To all house girls like me all over the world, im sending you all my hugs and prayers .I hope someday life will be easy for us all.

Domestic work should be a registered profession in African countries. That way, the fundamental human rights of workers would be secured. Laws against physical and emotional abuse would be enforced. I’m grateful for documentaries and videos like this that exposes their harsh realities. I’m from Nigeria. Cases like this are so rampant especially in big cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. They go unnoticed; “see something, say nothing.”

That is a good idea, but first, these countries need to establish and maintain a public education system that educates their populations to enter a viable economy, so that domestic, or farm work is not a default option for the majority of their population. Just because she's preparing the food doesn't mean they will allow her to eat it. That's especially cruel, imo, to have to prepare someone's meals but not be allowed even a bite. Its all about power. They have the power over the worker and it makes them feel better/more powerful. These people are obviously suffering inside themselves to be this cruel to innocent people just trying to make a living. Like that girl said at the end, "If I had money, wouldn't we be the same?" But generally people who have more think themselves better just because they have more. I guess it can be boiled down to that maybe they are scared that if they loose their money/power then they could end up the same way and no one wants to suffer just to live. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm just thinking out loud, really.

What was really surprising them was the fact that the young lady who was poor had a voice that people were listening to in addition to holding the couple accountable for their wrongdoing.

It is not everyone that does that, my family has employed house helps both males and females who were suffering in poverty. Most of them steal from us or plan evil even though you are nice to them. We give them a place to sleep, three square meals, pay their school fees if they want to attend school, buy them clothes and toiletries, and also pay them money and still give their families money. And if they finish their service we give them millions with the hope they can start their own business. PLEASE do not judge an entire race from a 27:50 minute video. thank you.

In Zimbabwe the older generation always said life was better for them before independence. Younger people would want to lynch them for saying that but when I see the domestic abuse coming from black employers it highlights another side to the coin. We always had very good experiences with houseboys / gardenboys and their employment usually lasted for years - trustworthy, reliable, honest and very well meaning. Obviously it is a very unequal relationship of master and servant, but for an uneducated, never employed adult, it offers free and safe housing (usually on the property) , no bills, easy work, food, regular income and hopefully a happy respectful environment for them to work in with the employer. Our houseboys had relationships with all of the family, in different ways. I observed similar with most of my friends and their families. For some reason I think this domestic arrangement works better when there is a white employer and black employee. Obviously abuse happened but not on the scale that it is happening now, and especially when it is often now the female employer who is monstrous to her maid.

that's what I'm saying. I throw away more than that on a cellphone game for gems, and tokens in a day, and these girls are working a whole month, scrubbing floors for this? Unable to raise $20 to get out of jail? This is so upsetting. Really, really upsetting. Are there charities? Can we sponsor girls to send aid? I feel so helpless setting here watching a youtube video when the idea of 3 girls struggling desperately to pay $15 for a shack to rent. For the love of God I just wasted $60 on pizza delivery. I want to figure out how to sponsor and I especially, if I can, find and help the girl Ester, she struck my heart the most.
