Very well done Fred, a real legend in steeplejacking and missed by so many after the programmes you made. RIP Fred.

"I've never fell off a big chimney"... Thanks for that Fred....it's great that you felt we needed that seeing as you thought if we don't know anything about climbing a chimney we wouldn't know anything about falling off one!😂

@@borntoclimb7116I doubt you've climbed a ladder near that high. I've seen people freak out way lower than that. One mistake your dead. This is long before safety ropes.

@@louiscolborn6715 Yes for the most peoples this is Nightmare stuff but for me as a freeclimber, ladder climbing is no problem, i climb the Buschhaus chimney in Germany, 307 meters tall, Elverlingsen 282 meters and Bergkamen 284 meters. In every 3rd world countrie they work like this or they climb steelbridges and powerpylons even without ladders, Just watch the workers from Kalkutta maintenance the pretty big bridge there.

Fred originally lived in a small terraced house directly opposite Bolton Wanderers ground- Burnden Park. Back in those days Bolton were one of the top clubs in the UK , with 'giants' like Nat Lofthouse playing for them. The club had huge crowds every fortnight . Fred never went ONCE 😅. Fred was a Man of Iron, Coal & Steam !

To explain to anyone who has never taken their lives into their own hands by doing something even similar to what Fred didis basically impossible. I've built and climbed scaffold all over refineries and steel mills and what this lion of a man did is flat out incredible.

He used to basically take these down by himself. Put the ladders up, build the scaffold and demolish the chimney with a hammer and bolster. Dangerous and hard graft. Not many people alive could do this today

He generally had an assistant at the bottom. Also there's a German built machine that climbs the chimney and can do a similar process without anyone being at risk

I still can’t believe he never used any safety harnesses and just walked all the way up at do you know why he holds the outside of the ladders and never the wrong?? It’s because it’s safer to hold onto the side of the ladder in a rung as a room can snap can you imagine that that’s why you always hold onto the side of your ladders when going up Any type of height
