That is what is so flawless about the writing in Blackadder (especially in BA 2 and BA Goes Forth), is that it has such simplicity combined with the impeccable delivery of the actors in the show, particularly Rowan, Tony and Tim in BA 2 and with the addition of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie in BA Goes Forth. In fact, just about all of the actors in the episodes are exceptional in their roles, from the Queen to the likes of Mrs Pants in "Money" and let's not forget, the simply unforgettable cameos (if you can even call them that) of Rik Mayall (R.I.P. to a legend) and Adrian Edmondson. A part of me is actually glad that they let the show end after series 4, as although there are times where you both wish for and sometimes experience a "comeback series" of some comedies, some things are just better left well alone (e.g. Fawlty Towers, Bottom) and will live on in our memories and the delights of KZbin and DVD!

Well, when I was younger, we used to have a great deal of French and German language series on TV. Some in Swedish, even. For some 20 odd years, every other show is in English, most of it American English even, so spoken Anglo Saxon ought not be considered a barrier to sell series off to foreign countries.

@Necramonium It's all in taste. I usually like mime. But, I found his Bean character to be just stupid, and not funny to me. I would get the joke, and understand why others are laughing, but Bean just never hit my funny bone. His BlackAdder character, though, had me in stitches. The last season, Blackadder Goes Forth, IMO, was the best. But, I know I am the odd ball out in not liking Bean.

I feel like people who said they liked Mr.Bean was mainly because of their nostalgia, and they enjoyed it for the sake of reliving childhood, while Blackadder is genuinely an amazing and downright hilarious show that is timeless. I recently discovered Blackadder a few months ago and have been addicted since, while with Mr.Bean, yes it was part of my childhood, but watching it now doesn’t make me feel anything 🤷🏻‍♀️.

She asked to see her husband the obvious assumption being it was before he was beheaded (which was originally booked for Wednesday but was put forward to Monday so Blackadder could have Wednesday free). So technically the permission for the wife to see her husband was to see the whole husband as in alive and in one piece, with his body still intact. As in not beheaded. The whole joke was around the fact Blackadder had already liberated the husband’s head from his body as such the constituent parts would no longer be in a cell. Why have a beheaded person still in a cell? If the wife wanted to see the husband she’d have seen his head on a pike already. It’s a joke. So there’s no real technically. If we’re being technical then the joke is lost. Like when it’s gone over your head when that’s something because you’ve no longer a head because your head is now on a pike. Although depending how long said head has been there you might not be able to identify the head in question. We’re on a road to nowhere.

Rowan Atkinson can't pronounce words that start with a B very well. Which is why it always takes him a little while to say "Baldric". You can't really notice it though, making Atkinson a great actor (though I dislike his more recent movies).

In the first series Baldrick was definitely smarter although Blackadder's intelligence level was somewhat uneven - for example in the Archbishop episode he could be quite cunning although mostly he was moronic. In this one they were at about the same level although Blackadder thought he was smarter. By the WW1 series, the last one, Baldrick was ridiculously stupid (I thought this aspect was the only weakness of that series).

100% wrong and unfortunately you've exposed your lack of education. Neither Nursie not the scriptwriters were wrong. Although Elizabeth 1 and Mary Queen of Scots were technically cousins once removed they were both Queens. They referred to each other as 'sister' i.e. the sisterhood of QUEENS. Just as Kings in friendly terms would refer to each other as 'brother' because they had the same status in life - it was a normal courtesy when Kings or Queens met or corresponded.

You know, while it wouldnt really be as funny, all of this could be avoided if Edmund had just told the Queen he was moving the scedual around. Also, how in the hell didnt anyone get the information that Farrow was dead? Weren't executions pretty damn public back then?

Executions were not only public until the Victorian period, but high-profile executions brought in local trade and musicians as a bad-tasting equivalent to a town's annual fair (though with more theft, particularly over the centuries as they swelled in number). By the 1980s everyone who was old enough to remember capital punishment only knew it when it was held privately within a prison, so it makes sense the show would play to audience perceptions. If they were going to go with a more accurate setting, they'd have had to stop the show for Edmund to explain why things are (as in Blackadder III where he has to explain that no one can vote at the start before the show really starts).

Jock McScottish do you know any history Jock? Mary came to England seeking refuge when matters went pear shaped for her in Scotland. Elizabeth was resolute that she wouldn’t do anything bad to her cousin and since Elizabeth’s own life and position had been threatened often in her youth she regarded the removal of a fellow royal by execution as unconscionable. Mary remained under house arrest for some years. Things only came to a head, pardon the pun, when it was discovered that Mary had become involved in a Catholic plot which wanted to put her on the throne. Elizabeth’s throne. Quite rightly, as was their jobsworth, Elizabeth’s advisors acted to prevent this happening and Mary lost her head. There’s some debate as to whether Elizabeth consented to this knowingly or unknowingly as it’s been suggested she signed the warrant for execution amongst other papers presented to her but she was super pissed off when she found out as she felt she’d been tricked and coerced into killing her cousin.

Evening would likely be considered to start around 7pm or so. In June it's light in London until about 10 pm, so daylight outside isn't necessarily inconsistent with evening. In winter it can be dark by 4:30 (especially on a cloudy day) so you can plausibly say 'good afternoon' to someone in darkness.
