वर्ष 1916 की गर्मियों में जिन्ना के मुवक्किल और दोस्त सर दिनशॉ पेतित ने मुंबई की गर्मी से बचने के लिए उन्हें दार्जिलिंग आने की दावत दी. वहीं जिन्ना की मुलाकात सर दिनशॉ की 16 साल की बेटी रती से हुई, जिनका शुमार अपने ज़माने की बंबई की सबसे हसीन लड़कियों में हुआ करता था. तीक्ष्ण बुद्धि वाली रती की जितनी दिलचस्पी रोमानी कविताओं में थी, उतनी ही राजनीति में भी. जिन्ना भारतीय राजनीति के शिखर को छूने के बिल्कुल करीब थे. हालाँकि उस समय उनकी उम्र 40 की थी, लेकिन दार्जिलिंग की बर्फ़ से ढकी ख़ामोश चोटियों और रती के बला के हुस्न ने ऐसा समा बाँधा कि रती और जिन्ना एक दूसरे के प्रेम पाश में गिरफ़्तार हो गए.
