The string slipped. It was in no way intentional. He does it before at 4:43 too, while playing those bass lines. Then continues to adjust. That string is pretty grossly out of tune, no where near equal OR just temperament. Idk if he has been experimenting with string tunings on his bass during live shows. Im sure he will. Though I believe he likes to keep the bass note equally tempered, while justly harmonizing above the fundamental.

Everyone is so polarized lol. Some of Jacob’s music hits me emotionally; some doesn’t. Fields of gold didn’t really do it for me, but I found this whole jam super catchy. He is incredibly talented, but art is all about compromise. Sometimes minimalism is key, other times it degrades music by making everything sound the same. Jacob definitely isn’t a minimalist, but I appreciate that he doesn’t water down his genius grasp of theory.
@laerkekerstenableАй бұрын
I also think that is not about emotion, but about soul. Music can be appreciated as someone offering an expression of their 'soul'. For me, this is what defines music. Soul. When someone tries to make music 'emotional' intentionally, it often has little to do with music, and can come across as something else. And sometimes, a little too 'trying to be emotional'. Music is all about soul, and that is what this boy brings to the table ever. single. time.
@johnnulf624Ай бұрын
@laerkekerstenable Wow, my initial comment was 6y ago! Time is something else. I agree with people trying to make music emotional instead of just letting it flow. It feels forced and ironically robotic. I'm finding that my best work happens when I am uncovering things in the moment. Not regurgitating the music but letting it speak to me in real time. Listening to what I'm singing and what I'm playing to reveal meanings I didn't notice or places the song feels like it wants to go musically based on where I am at that point in life or who is listening. I do feel like emotion goes hand in hand with this process as a natural response to the learning and that this emotional response is also something that I express through the music. But it has to be organic, and maintaining a sense of focus through it allows me to let all this get encoded into sound. I think this is a form of authenticity, as is being vulnerable enough to tell your own story. I've written powerful music that moves me in a way that I mostly only dreamed of when I wrote that first comment. That music has soul written all over it because it's genuine expression of my own experience, not me starting with "how do I make an impactful song?". Even if that music is dark sometimes, turning it into music is an act of taking hidden things and bringing them into the light and I think doing so for other people to hear can help them feel a sense of permission to do the same with the forces controlling them. And I think that's what makes a successful artist. You help liberate people by creating an encapsulation of what that process looks like. I'm learning to become more aware of all the layers of art. On one level of analysis you have how one chord relates to another tonaly. But if you're Jacob Collier, you might throw in some absolutely ridiculous chord that has no perceivable relationship to the other chords and then proceed to resolve it back to the song key through a winding series of chords that get you back home step by step. And the point is not even the relationship between those chords, it's the demonstration that even when you feel wildly out of place, you can still find your way back home. Little Blue by JC is the epitome of this because he doesn't just talk about finding your way home, he's constantly doing it with the music in this way. The whole song is in alignment and that is a soul song to me too. It helped me spiritually in a time of feeling disorientation and helped me be less afraid as a musician to venture into new territory and break the rules. I'm curious, how would you describe soul exactly?

I've read that he has the looping / samples STRUCTURE predefined, then he fills it in real time with his voice and the instruments. So he knows that whatever he plays, e.g. in the second 8-bar phrase is coming back in the 128th bar (or whatever). So he has to live perform it, while keeping in mind which parts he lays down when and where, and how they will fit together when they come back in.
