Martyn Joseph performs ‘Chapel Porth Beach’ to Vicky Murphy and her husband Marc, whose dramatic experience inspired the song.
Martyn wrote this as part of 21st Century Folk, Radio 2’s series that sees five people have songs written about their lives.
Pregnant with her first child, Vicky was trapped in a flooding cave at Chapel Porth beach in Cornwall. Hammered by waves that threatened to drag them out to sea, she and husband Marc believed they would not survive. Thanks to a mystery surfer and two RNLI lifeguards, they did.
To hear Vicky’s full story, find 21st Century Folk on BBC Sounds:

Recorded at The Drewe Arms in Drewsteignton, Devon. Produced by 7digital for the BBC.

Listening in the car this morning, arrived home and had to sit on the drive to hear the end of this beautiful song. What a storyteller you are! Reduced me to tears! So glad this tale had a happy ending for the family concerned.

Listening to this today on radio 2 in a sweltering laundry😢listening to this again. Never heard of you before Martyn or Vicky, Marc and your family. I’m fully aware of the power and horror of the sea. Was a pleasure to hear. 💕for so many reasons.

Know Chapel Porth very well, my favourite beach but very unforgiving and easy to get cut off. The lifeguards do warn people when they are there in the summer and drive along the beach to tell people to get to Chapel Porth or Porthtowan before tide comes in. Very beautiful song!

Just heard the last minute of this song and thought " who is this" ....I pondered someone who sounds vaguely like a mellow Bruce Springsteen but no it's some singer I have only just encountered......I'm in.

I've heard him give a talk on Springsteen's songwriting, and he's done an album of Springsteen covers. I think he'd appreciate the comparison.
