Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer... More information: bbc.in/1SC6Atc New Order's Blue Monday was released on 7 March 1983, and its cutting-edge electronic groove changed pop music forever. But what would it have sounded like if it had been made 50 years earlier? In a special film, using only instruments available in the 1930s - from the theremin and musical saw to the harmonium and prepared piano - the mysterious Orkestra Obsolete present this classic track as you've never heard it before.

Minor anachronism: the signal generator being used at 3:59 is from the 1950s, not the 1930s. It's an Advance E2, introduced around 1951 and designed to use 6SN7GT dual triodes, themselves not made until the 1940s. 1930s signal generators were basically hugely expensive and largely impractical until Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard introduced the 200A (1938) and then sold a bunch of 200Bs to Walt Disney for use in Fantasia, thus kicking off the founding enterprise of what later became silicon valley. Good luck finding one outside a museum.

Some chords and such are similar but it's totally different. Then they're constrained by the capabilities of particular instruments, but still manage to do this. In addition, they've made a dark and sort-of period appropriate music video. Even if you don't want to cop to "Genius," I'd hope we could both agree on "very impressive."

Perhaps you should have started with a Moog 'Theremini', which has pitch correction allowing new users to more easily play specific notes, plus other features not in a normal Theremin. Watch this demonstration at 6m05s -- /watch?v=8bakI0ITCqQ Femurdesign has an online 'Theremin' (plus apps for other devices) for anyone caring to test their musical skill. Extremely difficult to play a simple melody. I am in awe of Clara Rockwell playing "The Swan" and (especially) "Habanera".
