In Hafez's early days it was a different story tho. 80% of the Syrian national army is sunni now. It is also well known that the poorest population in Syria are allawites, so how exactly were they enjoying assad? They all know that he makes them very poor on purpose so that they are forced to join the military to put food on the table regardless of whether or not it's mandatory.
