Henley Passport Index names 2024's most powerful passports | BBC News

The Henley Passport Index is a global league of the most powerful travel documents, based on how many destinations they will get you to without a visa.
This year, the most powerful passports are issues by Spain, Germany, France and Italy in the EU, along with Japan and Singapore.
These passports will allow visa-free travel to 194 of 227 destinations.

As much as I hate to criticise a comment that demonstrates the nonsense of Brexit, but leaving the EU hasn't changed what countries the UK citizens can visit visa free. It obviously has removed our ability to reside in an EU member country and seek employment there, but visiting is still visa free.

@@andrewjones-productions From 2025, British citizens will need to hold an ETIAS visa waiver before visiting the EU. ETIAS is currently scheduled to launch in 2025. It is expected that when it is introduced that it will become mandatory soon after. Once the system is launched and is a necessity, passengers arriving from the eligible third-countries will need to have a valid visa waiver to enter the Schengen Zone. After ETIAS is launched, visitors to the EU from the UK must apply for a valid visa waiver before they travel. This must be obtained online and linked with a British passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining. Travellers must also indicate the country that they will visit first whilst in the EU. This is to confirm where the visitor’s passport will be checked and where they will enter the free travel area. Also, airport and port terminal staff will check passengers’ documents to ensure they have the correct authorisation to enter the EU before boarding flights or ferries. Not holding an appropriate visa waiver could result in being denied permission to board. Thanks to Uk being third country and Brexit.

Many countries take a reciprocal approach to visas. If your country requires a visa for nationals of a given country, you'll probably require one yourself to travel to that country.

@@Cobra10027 not all EU countries, only a handful,7 in total to date so far on a trial basis.I believe the UK will soon be on that list since the Brits and Germans are the top 2 nationalities from Europe to visit China. But Brits can still travel to Hong Kong and Macau visa free. But as with all things with China everything is political and the UK and China are not exactly getting along swimmingly well at the moment so it may never happen.😂

The ranking don't mean much if the citizens of that country don't travel for various reasons. I travel the world, sometimes i have a long layover, and i might consider visiting the city for few hours but i would not for for visa just for few hours or a day. Cities such as Dubai, - just high rise building for rich tourist. Moscow, don't feel safe From Phnom phen, Cambodia to Ho Che Ming, not for 1 night, i won't pay $60 visa. My travel schedule was too short. I accidentally planed a 5 days layover in Tokyo without a visa, they issued me one in an hour 😅

It's a shame that these rankings fail to create a holistic picture. Benefits such as those offered by belonging to the EU, as well as the home country's economic/political strength, and home country administrative competence are not considered.

As long as you're in the top 20,you'll be fine because you'll get visa free access to all the countries that you will actually want to visit. I would rather be in the top 50 than #1 if the main difference is due to having to apply for visas to Afghanistan, North Korea, Haiti, Myanmar, Yemen,Iran etc😂

We don't have to be able to travel all 194 countries without VISA. Lately a country's new president has requested visa-free travel to my country for reciprocity reason, and shortsighted politicians and bureaucrats allowed it, but this will definitely lead to illegal over-stays for illegal workings. All illegals in my country (with very few exceptions) have traveled in as tourists with VISA or VISA-free. A high priced deposit should be imposed to enter into my country regardless of VISA, which could also reduce ill-mannered legal tourists we hate.

Most countries use a system of reciprocity. If you're not willing to give them visa-free access, they're not gonna give you either. And this is highly politicized due to bipartisan xenophobia, so even countries that are highly democratic and provide billions in tourist revenue don't get it from the US.
