Why is Ngoza Fulani so uncomfortable and ashamed of her family heritage that she refuses to talk about her ancestry? Her questions were deliberately evasive like she was trying to hide something. I'm proud of my immigrant ancestors and would happily answer the question. I just don't understand why someone so passive aggressive with poor social skills like Fulani was invited there. I'm a British black African. I've always taken great pride in answering that particular question. I immediately say where my parents / Grandparents came from! I'm just as proud of my African origins, I'll never shy away, forget or deny. Yes, we live in a multicultural society. Living is giving and taking..talking, showing interest and sharing our human history. A person of a certain age will always be intrigued, sometimes even fascinated by different people. Of course, there is still hatred and racism, but they are never going to be my first assumption!! I mean... What's the harm in acknowledging that we are British, but obviously not “indigenous”? Taking an offence is really highlighting and emphasising inferiority, and we should be far from it by now.

Context is everything and unfortunately the palace has a long history of racism…. “It is perhaps fortunate that the terms of both the Race Relations Act and the Sex Discrimination Act mean the Queen cannot be prosecuted for any offence. Phillip Hall noted that for the first thirty-nine years of her reign, the Queen had ‘not made a significant black or Asian appointment’ to her 400-strong household. This is odd indeed for a monarch who has so championed the Commonwealth. It took until 2017, sixty-four years into her reign, for a black person to be appointed to a senior role (apart from one Nigerian equerry who worked for a few weeks in 1956).“ Rt Hon Norman Baker

What many people dont realize that these questions move past the common " Where are you from" questions and become more of an interrogation. From the perspective of the British Culture that has traditionally used Africans and Caribbeans to fight their wars and rebuild their Country and then told they were not welcome in the UK by rewarding the blacks who slaved for them, fought their wars and rebuilt their country with mass deportations 50 years after the fact ( See Windrush) ( See Jamaicans in RAF WWII). Many of their children are being told they are not british and denied citizenship.. This Hussey woman was disgusting and insensitive. I find that tone, temperature, place and time was disregarded with the purpose of objectifying Ms. Fulani. I myself am proud to answer the question, I speak clear english with a Caribbean accent but solidly American. The where are you from question has many answers..sometimes its confusing..I may answer based on what I think the person meant.. In a business setting where I represent my company, it means WHAT COMPANY ARE YOU FROM? FULANI WAS CORRECT HERE. In a peer to peer setting the question means, where around these parts are you from? So Me, I say where my house is. FULANI is correct here ! In an informal one on one setting the question means, I hear a slight accent, you act and look a little different..where are you from? In this personal space, where I have gathered personal curiosity, I can say I am Jamaican by birth, an American National and a Resident of wherever I am living.. Sometimes however someone throws the personal question with inflection and tone to objectify me personally and I instinctively always say where I am living..because I assume they really dont want me to get so personal in a public setting.. This interrogation was awkward for Ngosi Fulani and downright offensive, designed to objectify her. It was past curiosity. What the Hussey should have said was: " I am curious, are you of African or Caribbean Heritage?" She could have picked out the thing that fascinated her the most, Wow your hair is just marvelous! can you tell me a little about yourself? Your name is beautiful! Who gave you such an amazing name? These words when used correctly encourage conversation and do not condescend as the Hussey did.

@@istvanglock7445 I would urge you to perhaps listen to the alleged conversation again. Fulani (her present name), is very evasive to an innocent question asked by someone who is known for being gracious and kind. So, perhaps to not be seen as rude, Lady Susan persists. Fulani is wearing "traditional garb" so the question is reasonable. If I wore my dirndl out to an event you can bet I would be asked a lot of questions. If I wore my kilt, people would maybe ask me which clan I am representing. Fulani was inviting questions, in my opinion, however she didn't want to answer until the right question was asked. She made sure to be as evasive as possible until the perceived "racist" question was resorted to. I mean, take a hint Fulani, Lady Susan is trying to make polite conversation based on observations. At no point was she rude. Maybe a little overzealous. So it is my opinion that Fulani created her very own victim moment because nothing in that conversation, to me at least, had the least intention of racism. It might be racist or very inquisitive questioning. I'm British Asian, born in Kenya, brought up in the UK since age 5. My parents and grandparents were born in Kenya. My parents moved to the UK in early 1960s. I went to Saudi 15 years ago, and every single shopkeeper asked my heritage. They would ask me where I was from. I would answer UK. No, where are you from, I would answer London, thinking that they didn't understand, however, every one knows London. No, where are you really from?" They would point out my skin colour. That I was too light to be African and too dark to be white European. I figured that they wanted the root of my heritage. Which is complicated to explain, so I would say India. Just because its much easier. Even now, most people I meet , especially people from Arab /Asian countries want to know my heritage. I think its just an inquisitive thing. I mean, I'm a Muslim woman, I wear a scarf, that should be enough for other Muslims. No, they want the entire genealogical bloodline. Its interesting.

" _difficult job of making small talk with guests_ " That's been part of her job for a very long time, so one would think she must be fairly good at it by now. With all the accusations of institutional racism that the Palace has suffered recently, you would think that Hussey would be wide-awake to any risk of that flaring up again. But no, she dived right in and wouldn't let go - despite Fulani giving her plenty of opportunity to stop. No blame can be attached to Fulani. Hussey should have read the signals, and backed off. She clearly showed herself to be a liability to the Palace, and they had no choice but to require her resignation.

We all still identify as Indians and tamilians. We refer to ourselves Malaysian of Indian ancestry or Malaysian Indians for short(just like the Chinese in Malaysia refer to themselves Malaysian Chinese). We have no problem to mention we have Indian ancestry or heritage as it's a fact. People are so overly sensitive and closed minded these days. We take it as a compliment when people ask about our ancestry, ethnicity or heritage (hussey should have used the word ancestry, ethnicity or heritage instead of nationality BUT it was clear as day what she meant and what she was referring to) because it shows they are interested to learn about different heritages and/or cultures. Asking where someone is from(ancestry) is also a very common way to break ice or to have small talks Especially when one is dressed in a traditional garments and sports ethnic sounding names (fulani's name is not a traditional British or english name) like Ngazi Fulani. People really need to calm down and STOP being so closed and regressive minded. Not every damn thing is racism. That word has lost its meaning entirely now. Totally cheapened it. Disgusting really. And what a coincidence that this took place just after it came out in the news recently that during the early phase of Harry and Meghan's relationship, Hussey had adviced Harry to take things slow with Meghan and said their union will end badly otherwise AND Fulani just happen to be a big fangirl of Meghan Markle and criticised the royals for being racists in support of Meghan. Such bollocks. If this continues, people in general are going to avoid making conversations or stop talking to certain people who are overly sensitive as a whole because losing one's job and livelihood and the stress of being labelled a racist over nothing is just isn't worth it. As an outsider observing, this habit of screaming racism over everything under the roof to gain victim points seems to be the MOST prevalent among people of African ancestry. From the many comments I've read, many people of African ancestry themselves say the same thing and are ashamed of the behaviour of people like Fulani and markle as it reflects badly on them as a group.

Allan M - Yes really. What a storm in a teacup. The British offended party (looking very obviously African in her outfit it must be said) could just have laughed and shrugged it off after stating her true identity. She replied rather boldly (could even be construed as confrontational) to a very elderly lady - isn't that enough? Lady H probably regretted her enquiry afterwards and now is in disgrace for the short remainder of her life. Why blow it up into an major incident involving Buckingham Palace? Everybody in UK has roots in one culture or another if we go back a couple of generations. Perceptions understandably also are affected by how a person dresses when in public places in UK.

Unfortunately, this was not meant to be racist. I'm not making any excuse but she's of a different generation from an old age aristocratic background. I think that this was inappropriate but I don't think that it should be automatically deemed as racist. I think that rather than this lady having to step down , I think that she'd have undergone compulsory diversity training and issue an apology for being inappropriate. The lady on the receiving end , although I understand her frustration had exaggerated what has happened .. I fear that by shutting people down for ignorant comments that we will only leave such ignorance swept under the carpet and left to fester and grow. The age of political correctness, in my view has just achieved a false sense of tolerance and respect....

@holcroft1969 it doesn't help minorities to act this way. This woman should have realised that she is a minority in this country. To be honest, , it was hard not to look at her and not think that she was from a different country. She plainly stood out with her hairstyle and style of dress. I don't understand, if some minorities don't want to be questioned about their background, then they should try to blend in a bit more and be more 'British' as she adamantly claimed to be. Although, unfortunate and I can see the offence caused , it was exaggerated that the whole incident was racist.

I feel in this case why this women wearing full on ethnic outfits expect an elderly women to think she is from the UK. I think throwing the word 'racist' around so easily is dangerous. And also I feel there is also some insecurities and shame being 'ethnic' in a predominately 'white' country as well. There is a huge difference between racism and social insensitivity.

No in my opinion I don't think that question is racist, I get asked that all the time (I was born in the EU as well, to parents who were born in a Caribbean country unfamiliar to most people from the UK)... I think maybe the problem lies in the fact that when she told the royal lady, she kept asking where she was born, when the UK as the answer, didn't make sense to the royal, because it wasn't Africa or the Caribbean etc.. When the royal asked where her parents were from, she could've just replied with "I'm born here but my parents immigrated from .... to the UK in the 50s (or whatever year it was).. Or she could said "my family has been in this country for generations, my parents and grandparents were born here as well etc"

@@DJROO65 Yes, the interrogation almost seemed designed to 'put her in her place' or something. It wasn't a simple enquiry, it was an invasive and dominating interaction, especially given the fact that the 'Lady' was representing the monarchy. Bad form.
