Growing up in the 80's there was a D-Day veteran living on our road. He had his left leg from the knee down amputated. We use to do odd jobs for him like mow & rake leaves & we always use to ask to see his medals or tells us stories which he never showed or told us. Some years after he passed away, I spoke to his daughter who told us because he was injured & back in England within a few days without firing his gun that he felt ashamed. Definition of ashamed is embarrassed or guilty because of ones actions, characteristics or associations. Saddens me that he felt that.

I have deep sympathy for the old woman and that her father was killed there on D - Day. My grandpa was a simple soldier in the German Wehrmacht and my grandma had been waiting for her young husband to return from WWII. Then she got the sad news that he died in Stalingrad ( Russia) . Unfortunately , we don`t know where he was buried in Stalingrad to say goodbye to him.RIP to all soldiers no matter which nation was killed in the war.🙏💞😔

As a British Army veteran I am conscious that it is merely a matter of fate, timing and in some cases geography as to who were called upon to carry out this task. I could have been there, you could have been there and our loved ones could have been there. Would we have been so brave? Would we have carried out the task so well? I often wonder. Thank you to the BBC for marking this day with dignity.

We remember those who lost their lives on D Day and afterwards ensuring the freedoms we enjoy today. Their courage and sacrifice should never be forgotten. However, D Day did not change the course of the war, in that the Germans would have been beaten by the Soviet Union anyway, even if the D Day landings had never occurred or failed. The war was definitely lost for Germany by February 1943, when the battle of Stalingrad ended. The Wehrmacht never recovered from the losses of men and equipment in the battle, and from then on , apart from one setback a month or so later, the Red Army held the initiative and would never lose it.

My father and grandfather took part in D-Day, both serving on the Polish cruiser, the ORP Dragon, which shelled Sword beach on D-Day. I’m just outside of Caen right now. I couldn’t get to any of the beach areas or even into Caen or Bayeaux to see the museums due to police blocking all access to the towns from 6am until 10pm. Even the tourist buses needed a police escort. My grandfather served during WWII (I’m also an Army war veteran) and I was looking forward to being there for this event. Instead, I sat in a hotel room 27kms away and saw the highlights on the internet. If you ever plan to attend a D-Day anniversary in the future, book your tour and hotel a year in advance and that you are inside the exclusion zone no later than the 5th of June. I learned the hard way.

Let us not forget this ever. Let us remember the combined effort of the Allies to boot Nazism out of western Europe. Including the contributions from smaller nations to the invasion effort - it wasn't just Britain, France and the U.S. Canada had Juno Beach and landed an army there. Australia and New Zealand whose major contributions were in other theatres of the war still managed to put up five squadrons a piece under R.A.F. command - that alone was almost more than the aircraft that the Luftwaffe put up that day. There were Dutch, Poles, Czechs, Norwegians, Greeks, South Africans and more.

The democratically elected government of Ukraine was overthrown in a coup in 2014. The Ukraine regime then reneged on the two Minsk agreements that they signed brokered by Germany and France. This reminds me of Germany breaking the Munich agreements in 1938.

Michael Hass - the last legitimate leader of Ukraine was Viktor Yanakovych. He was overthrown in coup just as happened in Austria in 1938. Not suprisingly his supporters refused to accept to result of the ‘coup’ provoked by Germany USA and the West. Many of them were killed and a war has been raging ever since (2014)

The Soviets wouldn't have stood a chance if America hadn't provided an insane amount of food and military equipment. Even Stalin admitted as much. But despite that, Russia likes to steal all the glory and considers themselves liberators, even though they actually OCCUPIED multiple countries and murdered hundred of thousands of innocent civilians and didn't give them back their independence for decades. The Soviets also helped start the war by allying with the Nazis and invading Poland.

Don’t respect really their victory day in the slightest. Their value of human life was completely different and still is today. They didn’t care about their men, and still don’t. They just saw them as bodies to throw to the meat grinder, and when they tried to retreat, they shot them anyways. I don’t count that in the slightest as an honourable victory. Still terribly sad for the innocent lads though who took part.

The greatest losses were suffered by the Soviet Union - 26.6 million, Germany - 6.48 million, Poland - 6 million (more than half of them were Jews, victims of the Holocaust), Japan - 3.76 million and India - 3 million. The vast majority of casualties were among civilians. Compare - human losses in the main countries of the anti-Hitler coalition amounted to: in the USA - 400 thousand, Great Britain - 370 thousand, France - 600 thousand people. China lost 35 million people during the long war with Japan.

We must never forget the role the Soviet army played in making this victory, and indeed the victory over Adolf Hitler. Without the sacrifice of the soviet army, the allie´s invasion of France would have proven to be a much more costly campaign. The cemeteries that contain the remains of American soldiers who gave their lives in the cause of Freedom 80 years ago would be much larger than they already are without the similar massive sacrifice of life by the Russian people we once called friend and ally.
