My father landed on Omaha beach, wounded in his shoulder 19 days later, and had a metal plate holding that shoulder together for the remainder of his life, rarely did he speak of the experience until close to the end of his life 15 years ago. When I left for Vietnam the look in his eyes said he knew what I did not about war at that time, and he was afraid for me. After my return, he never asked one question about my experience there, strange. All these men were heroes in their day as every veteran is and will always be. Please America and other countries do more for your veterans. They have earned it.

My uncle, 18 years young, died on D-Day at Normandy. He was small & weighed down by his pack Like many others, he was killed in the water, never even reaching the beach. People fail to understand the brutality of D-Day & the truly selfless sacrifice that many young men made on that day. Every year, my mother pulled out his final letter to her. She would read it with tears running down her face.

My grandfather arrived on Omaha beach on June 7th, 1944 and died Sept 21, 1944. 5 days before my mother's 2nd birthday. My grandmother was 7 months pregnant with my Aunt. Those 3 short months for a 22 year old young father were undoubtedly a living nightmare. His letters reflect how he goes from "when I get home" to "if I ever make it home". Casualties of war affect the generations that follow. My mother never got to have a dad and grieved her whole life over what could have been.

I was in a movie theatre in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada watching this movie. When the scenes of the storming the beach with the sound of the bullets, explosions and scenes of death were shown most of the older men in the audience got up and left. Many of them in tears. It was heart breaking. Their wives left with them comforting them. Several of them did come back and watch the rest of the film. I don't remember a lot of the film as good as it was. However, I will always remember the affect it had on those men. I am sure this scene was played over and over in movie theatres across the world.

My grandfather fought in WW2. He was drafted in France when his wife was pregnant. He fought, held the line, and was captured at Dunkirk. Spent 6 years in a Nazi P.O.W. camp. Only met his daughter when he got home. She was 6. He was a broken man. The French government completely ignored the veterans. They got no pension. No assistance. No help. Lots of memorials for foreign soldiers, but the French who fought were deliberately forgotten. By everyone. He never really spoke about it. He died years ago now. I miss him.

@@daviddovnino7585 Hey. Mr Trudeau is far from the most inspiring PM. And he can be fairly criticized. But he is no dictator. Dictatorship in Canada is pretty unlikely, given the structure of a Westminster style parliamentary democracy, and the division of powers between the federal and provincial/territorial governments. On this day of all days, please accord Canadians the respect we accord you. I think political discussions benefit from avoiding hyperbole. Many of us are also not impressed with the leadership of the parties that hold the second- and third-largest number of federal seats. I remind Americans that a NATO country has invoked section 5 only once in almost 80 years. That was the USA. Canada and the other NATO nations had your back. Canadian special forces were in Afghanistan beside your special forces long before anyone else. Let us decide how to govern our nation. We are reasonably well informed as voters. Every authoritarian regime has one thing in common, they have Leftist beliefs. Socialist, Communist, Fascist, etc. As for movies depicting the "Realities" of war, they aren't even close. Why??? Because you would make the viewers literally and physically ill if they portrayed what actually happens in combat. Ask any combat vet and IF you can get them to tell you, you will see how horrible it actually is. You simply can't portray on screen how horrible war is. It’s definitely a bonus to talk with these guys. As a teenager I met an old Army general whose very first combat action, as a second lieutenant, was Omaha Beach on D-Day. Half his platoon never made it out of the water. He said that between 6 June 44 and 6 May 45, his platoon was basically wiped out three times. He was one of four guys that got through the war relatively unscathed…which meant he got two Purple Hearts without losing a limb, a basic physical function or his life. I have to add that I knew some Vietnam veterans, mostly Marines or Green Berets, who had survived some harrowing experiences, mentioned out of respect. But that old general, long gone now, still stands out.

The reason reason is it causes depression and sadness among anyone reading those and learning about what happened in the concentration camps. My thought is they should feel sad and be empathetic for what happened during World War II. If we don’t teach it it’s going to repeat itself. It’s crazy. They don’t teach about slavery in the Civil War because people feel bad. It’s called empathy. I hated reading Anne Frank diary. It made me sad. The democrats are kinda like that. The Lesser evil. The least bad choice. Bc the bad choice, the worst choice, just so much... i can't even list it all and you discount all these overwhelming facts, claim them all as conspiracies or lies or idk what. But the pary of "law and order" has their boy CONVICTED in a fucking COURT OF LAW on obvious charges of a crime he obviously committed but none of ya;ll really understand so you claim it wasn';t a crime. Well, if it wasnt a serious crime, tehy couldn't charge anyone with it. If it wasn't 34 counts of serious crimes with an EXTREMELY strong case, you could never charge a former president with them. But they did, and they convicted. When ya'll see a convicted felon, you say things likle they don't deserve AC in 100 degree heat. They are barely human to you. But you're boy gets CONVICTED and none of you think it's real. I acknowledge it;'s easy to assume it's politically motivated. Trump has openly stated that he would use powers that don't belong to POTUS to persecute rivals. And he did. 2/3 or 3/4 of GOP believe the election was not free and fair. I've looked and asked and have noit been shown a single piece of evidence to turn over more than literally a handful of votes out of a few hundred million. As usual the initially miscounted votes for the entire nation was nearly a net zero/. Even if all votes miscounted initially and re-applied in Trump's favor all in Michigan where it was closest, he'd still be THOUSANDS away from winning Michigan. Even if he WON michigan, he'd still not have enough electoral votes. Convenient that allll the votes that you guiys think wer miuscounted or whatever were all in Trump's favor. If the dem's are so incompetant, how were the able to pull off this insanely complex, widespread and impactful conspiracy without a single shred of real evidence being left behind? In 2016, Trump basically said every state that voted for him, didn't have any voter fraud, but those other states! Oh boy! they all had millions of illegal immigrants casting votes for clinton! How?? How'd they do that? Why did so many people then go and vote GOP for the other races on the tickets? Why did the results match the polls so closely other than of course a few thousand in a few counties which won Trump the WH despite receiving 3 million fewwer votes overall (something tump disputes again without evidence). The vast majority of illegals live in the four big states: Cali, Tex, NY and that other place, America's swampy dong: FLA. CA and NY are firmly blue. Tx is firmly red. Only Florida was even up in contention. SO why woudl millions of illegals RISK EVERYTHING to vote in an election where their vote wouldn't change anything (othjer than in FLA where Trump won,. therefor no fraud was possible, per Trumpism #1328)? It doesn't make any sense; there's no motive. Ya'll so certain that 'me more money, economy good for all 340 million!" which is not actually the case and just fails even common sense. But many conservatives feel that the economy was much better under trump bc they had more money to spend before covid. It's widely acknowledged thta thte first yr or so of a new Admin's rule, the economy is still essentially functioniung off the previous admin's policy. And we had been steadiyl booming for like 7 or 8 yrs when Triump took over. In Obama's terms., the Dow went from a low of less than 8k (not long after he took office) to almost triple that - about 22K - soon after he left. Obama was handed a devistating deficit - not entirely Bush's fault considering Great Recession. That had turned into a healthy surplus when he finished. What did tTrump do wiaht that surplus and booming economy? The absoliute last thjing any Econ minor would say to do: he CUT TAXES, causing a massive $1 TRILLION/YR EXTRA DEFICIT. Most of htose cuts impacted only (or primarily) his rich friends and himself since he was still runniung his companies and didn't divest shit.

At least it was a more pleasant and respectful response than what we normally hear from CNN guest interviews. I just don’t like when people (especially celebrities) are outright hating and disrespectful with a lot of nonsense. I am ok with people who have different opinions than me, when we can agree to disagree with respect for each other as human beings. So that’s why I admired this response from Tom. I'm a US Army vet, was in the 82nd Airborne during the first Gulf War, the "line in the sand". I did my 4 years, got out, and graduated from college. Before I started my first job, I took time off and went to the beaches of D-day. I tried to imagine on that day what it would have been like to jump in. I was alone and remember the train ride to the stop. I was shaking with nervousness. I read the books and lived a bit of the life of a paratrooper so my imagination was running away from me. It was a balmy rainy day. I arrived at the station with a paper map in hand as Google earth didn't exist then. I hailed a taxi. The driver was an old Frenchman who was a young boy during the invasion. I spoke a bit of French and he spoke a bit of English and he gave me the grand tour. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Thank you to all the vets to gave themselves up to the cause. If I had a chance, I'd do my time all over again and if I lived in that time, I'd do that too. Long live the spirit of America!

@@BlurredUniverse357 heroes usually die, one in a million survives, by some mistake. If they were on the front line and survived, then they thought rationally, took care of themselves a lot, never took any risks, and simply succeeded. Those who survive were usually in positions that were not particularly dangerous, cooks, coders, various drivers, anti-aircraft defense, staff soldiers, military police, etc., etc. When they survive the war, as each year passes, it seems more and more to them that they were especially brave in the war and the deeds they did in the war become more and more brilliant, clear, and decisive. Those on the front line, how to say ,first line, die a lot, a lot, a lot. The rest of them are mostly "damaged goods "for life, they generally find it difficult to fit into the family, they find peace strange, they have become addicts of adrenaline and nothing can compensate for that feeling, the birth of a child is there somewhere, definitely even stronger (for a normal person), but even that lasts for a short time. And in war, that excitement, that fear,or a burst of courage lasts for days, weeks, months....there are alternate bursts of nice excitement, strong, and "bad" excitement, even stronger. And that feeling ,when, after everything, you understand that you are still alive, is indescribable. That euphoria can last for days.It is the observation of a no - hero who survived.
