Five Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza, the military says, in one of the deadliest incidents of its kind since the war began in October.
Israeli media say the troops were killed when they were mistakenly hit by Israeli tank fire on Wednesday, with the military confirming they were killed "as a result of fire by our forces".
It happened in Jabalia in northern Gaza, where Israeli forces are battling Hamas fighters.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians have fled the fighting and bombardment.

US still deneying the attack on USS Liberty was deliberate...good luck ever proving this, but yea...pretty much clear what the objective was at nova festival, thats why the US opposes any external investigation into the gaza onslaught. forensic evidence would quickly bring down the 1200 casualty figure down to probably less then 100 civilians on Hamaz account and the vast majority IDF 'friendly fire'.

I recall that, months ago, there was talk of possible local government structures. This is not the vacuum of ideas suggested by this BBC report. The issue will be how to decide which of the potentially viable alternatives will be most practical, which depends a lot of what is most acceptable to Palestinians once Hamas control is broken. I can understand why it might be best to keep options open and do some consultation later, though it would be nice to have more detail now on possible arrangements, building on what was already floated some time ago.

Unfortunately, soldiers are often wounded or killed by friendly fire in wartime. During WWII, my father, an American Army soldier, took a scout patrol to a deserted French village to search for German soldiers & possible booby traps. Another American force on a hill overlooking the village spotted my father's men slinking around the village, & began to shell it, mistaking the American soldiers for Germans. My father said he & his men had to duck, cover, & worm their way out of the village, barely escaping with their skins intact. This is the risk combatants take during "the fog of war".

This just shows how war works. The landscape is quite complicated. They did not mean to kill their soldiers but yet the soldiers were killed.
