It's pretty goofy ... my girlfriend and I were having this exact same conversation last night ... what's up with South Korea?! We're baffled. The only thing we could think of was that the guy who was President (who wanted to call martial law) is corrupt as corrupt can be, and got scared ... and now his political faction doesn't want to own up to the fact that they support a completely corrupted dude. Kind of like in the U.S. with Trump ... the Republicans sold their souls to support a known rapist and convicted felon ... while knowing EXACTLY who and what he is ... but he brings them MONEY and POWER.

After the president's impeachment, the prime minister assumed the role of acting president, but there were suspicions that he might have been involved in the president's acts of insurrection. However, given the need to stabilize the chaotic country quickly, the National Assembly decided to cooperate with him for the time being. Nevertheless, he betrayed those expectations by delaying the appointment of the constitutional judges who were to preside over the impeachment trial passed by the National Assembly, and he also refused to authorize the special investigation into the insurrection. As a result, suspicions grew that the prime minister was involved in the insurrection and was obstructing all efforts, leading, regrettably, to his impeachment as well, following the president’s. However, the issue is that this is not the end. Following the prime minister's impeachment, there is not a single cabinet minister who can confidently declare themselves uninvolved in this insurrection. Furthermore, the president has yet to relinquish his ambitions, continuing to evade investigations and delay justice.

Not really, the conservative president is fighting against the left wing politians who back up and collaborate with North Korea and China. Dangerous words. Calling people a “cancer”, “subhuman”, etc. Never ends well. More people have been killed/hurt by “cleansing” attempts than you’d know.

@waitingforapril sorry to break it to you but, that is exactly whom I address, and why I call it a cancer. I'll ignore the fact you're completely missing the gist of my comment which tries to deliver the holistic perspective. And I'll answer you. This is not an ordinary political 'conflict' you can naively hold your judges and remain prudent. It's an obviously attempted coup, an attemp to demolish the democracy itself, and push the country into a brink of war. Every new confession and admittance from high ranking military officers and currently detained former defense minister is coming out each week, which proves the animosity of this crime, and even more connection among the high ranking officials. So by your logic, I'm exactly calling those accountable a cancer

I'm not particularly in favour of a monarchy. I have very little interest in our monarchy however I think that it does bring a certain level of stability that countries that have a president as head of state don't have. Plus I would say that people that become president tend to have an unpleasant ruthlessness that is necessary to get to the top. Both systems are imperfect.

...Thanks for cheering for Korea to become the next communist state in East Asia. The leader of the opposition party is being persecuted for sending $80 million directly to Kim Jung Un. He also sent his own brother to a mental institution. He is charged for violating election law. He called the US troops in Korea "occupying forces." Seven key witnesses to his corruption cases were found dead. He impeached all the judges and persecutors who were on his cases. He has sent civilians who tried to expose him to mental institutions. He openly supports the CCP and voted against the espionage law in Korea. The whole party passed bills to change the constitution in order to protect him. They cut down all the defense budgets and disbanded the National Intelligent Services. If you are Chinese, sure, you would be happy that Korea will soon be a part of China. But if you are neither Korean nor Chinese, please don't say anything.

There are three important elections in Korea: presidential elections, parliamentary elections, and local elections. The party to which the president belongs becomes the ruling party, but it may not receive public support in parliamentary elections. @cea6770
@cea6770 8 сағат бұрын
As others have said, it is possible because the assembly elections and presidential elections are separate. To provide more detailed context, during Yoon's presidential election, the now 'ruling party' was already pretty unpopular and a minority party (less so than now), largely due to the corruption scandals and subsequent impeachment of their former party leader and ex-President Park GH. So they brought it a Yoon SY as an 'untainted' political outsider, a prosecutor who led the charge in Park GH's corruption investigations, as their candidate for the presidential election. Even then they only won by less than 1%. In the subsequent assembly election, the 'ruling party' lost even more seats. Which isn't surprising given that Yoon has been the most unpopular president in recent history even before the self-coup.

It seems that many journalists might not be aware that the law requires a case to be judged by nine justices. There are economic concerns, but it's important to adhere to the legal system. To clarify, before the declaration of martial law, there was an agreement to appoint three additional judges to the court. However, Han Duck-soo was impeached because he did not make these appointments. If Choi follows in Han's footsteps, he too might need to be replaced. It's essential for Korea to run according to its laws and systems. It's heartening to see that people in Korea can hold peaceful protests involving millions without any incidents.
@Deepsleep-f3v

Those three seats for the Constitutional Court were empty for months before the Martial Law, because the opposition party impeached all of them. The same people who are impeaching Han for not appointing the justices are the ones who didn't want to appoint the justices. The court demanded for new justices, but they refused. Plus, you just can't impeach everyone just because someone refuses to cooperate with the bigger party. The Korean constitution clearly says that there needs to be more than 200 votes in order to impeach the acting president. There were 192 people voted for the impeachment of Han. Han will be the 29th official to be impeached for the last 2 years. The opposition party has been impeaching everyone including the judges. So stop spreading left wing propaganda.

@@Deepsleep-f3v You really think people are idiots don't you. (1) The opposition party did not impeach Constitutional Court justices. There isn't even a way to impeach a Constitutional Court justice unless they do so themselves. They simply ended their 5 year term. Why would they even impeach them. The Democratic Party appointed 2 of the 3 former holders of the currently empty seats. (2) The Korean constitution does not say an acting president has to have 200 votes. The reason the president requires 200 votes (technically, more or equal to 2/3 of assembly members of which there are currently 300 but the number is not fixed) is because it is a democratically elected position, whereas PM (who only acts as President in case of impeachment) is unilaterally appointed by the President, under non-binding advisement of the Assembly. The division of the Assembly which provides preliminary interpretation of laws have stated only a simple majority is necessary. If PM Han wants to oppose this decision, he can go to the Constitutional Court.

This is happening because the remnants of the pro-regime coup have yet to be eradicated. Recently, even the acting president was one of them, and most of the ministers are no exception. Therefore, the situation will remain tumultuous for the time being, but it is hoped and believed by many that this crisis will soon be resolved through democratic procedures. When this settles, it will be recorded/remembered not only as a very rare failed pro-regime coup but also as a great victory for the citizens. Fingers crossed!

South Korea's Democratic Party stated that if Acting Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok behaves in the same manner as former Acting Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, they will immediately proceed with impeachment. If such a situation arises, the required number of members to hold a Cabinet meeting will not be met, effectively leaving South Korea in a state of anarchy.
@cea6770
@cea6770 8 сағат бұрын
Impeaching (Acting President & PM) (Vice PM & Minister) Choi Sang Mok does not mean the government is in a state of anarchy. (1) For each Minister who is impeached, each Ministry still operates as usual under the Vice Minister, who are, specific to this government, far more qualified than the purely-political and unqualified Ministers of Yoon's government. (2) I assume you mean if we drop to less than 10 State Council members, it is impossible to have a State Council Meeting. That would require 5 more impeachments, not just Vice PM & Minister Choi. Next in line after Choi is Vice PM & Minister Lee Ju Ho, who to our knowledge, was not in the State Council Meeting which lead to martial law. Perhaps he will be more likely to comply with investigations into the coup. We will see. (3) Even if the State Council Meetings are no longer in session, that only means they cannot make significant changes on government policies outlined in Artice 89 of the constitution, which include veto laws instated by the National Assembly. A few weeks without a State Council is not unmanageable. Furthermore, the President and Prime Minister (for which Vice PM Choi now takes both roles), can just appoint new members to the State Council if the need truly arises. Anyone who is not actively serving in the military can be a State Council member and appointing a new State Council member does not require a National Assembly hearing or State Council meeting. With Vice PM & Minister Choi having both acting President and PM roles, he can appoint new State Council members by himself without counsel. It has just become common practice to have all State Council members be Ministers during and after DJ's presidency as Ministers require an Assembly hearing and having all State Council members *de facto* go through an Assembly is more democratic. It's likely if it truly goes to 5+ impeachments and an urgent need for a State Council arises, the Acting President & PM will just appoint the Vice Ministers as State Council members.

Yoon's personal claims is that the main opposition party, the Democratic Party, as well as various other people like the then leader of the ruling party, the leader of the secondary opposition party, the entire election comission, various members of the judiciary, a KZbinr, leadership of major labor unions, etc., are "North Korean anti-state forces". And in particular, that the opposition parties only got a majority by rigging the election with help from the election comission. Despite investigations by both the election commission (who he appointed an unqualified personal friend to head) and the NIS (National Intelligence Service, Korean equivalent of the CIA) both confirming no such rigging has occured and is literally impossible. Korean elections are done with paper ballots and counted by hand. Subsequent invenstigations have shown this claim is bogus and he just wanted to be a dictator, with him planning a coup long before the most recent assembly election. The main players seem to be former head of military intelligence, Noh Sang Won, who was fired during the previous president's term for rape charges, but which he views as a political witchhunt due to feminism. Noh Sang Won is close friends with his successor as head of miilitary intelligence Moon Sang Ho, and previous head of presidential security, Kim Yong Hyun, and saw the opportunity to return to the military in a major capacity if a self-coup were to happen, and started planning a coup since early 2023. Yoon - Kim - Noh - Moon actively started to organize a coup around March 2024, hoping to trigger a new Korean War with North Korea to justify martial law. This lead to the seeming escalation of tensions with North Korea we have seen in 2024 (the Mongolian embassy incident, surveillence drones in Pyeongyang, propaganda and feces balloons, etc.). North Korea has not acted on these provocations. Then minister of national defence, Shin Won Sik, seems to have been at least partially aware of this coup attempt and privately opposed the self-coup, but did not go public with this knowledge, and did not deter these provocations. After a major intelligence hack, ex-Minister Shin publicly stated he was firing Moon Sang-Ho, and restructuring military intelligence, possibly as a self-coup deterent, in September 2024. Yoon then fired Shin and appointed Kim as the minister of national defence. With their attempts to provoke North Korea not being successful, they seem to have shifted strategies around November 2024 to (1) claim the election was rigged by North Korea, then (2) use military intelligence black ops to fake a North Korean invasion and/or terrorist attacks pretending to stop the investigations into the election. Three locations of such faked terrorist attacks have been identified (Chengju airport, Daeju airport, and the THAAD joint US-Korean military base), and Noh's private notes also reveal Baengnyeongdo (the closest island in South Korea to North Korea) as a potential target. They failed at step (1) of the plan.

@oliverhughes610 oop maybe I should have clarified, I'm korean! It's actually a common grammatical error that's related to something called 비음화(nasalization). Basically it's a rule where when certain letters meet their pronunciation change! Typically when ㄱ(the k in seok) and ㄹ meets we pronounce it as ㅇ (the ng in seong) and ㄴ(the n in nyeol). Even though in the former president's case it's ㄱ meeting ㅇ, since ㅇ and ㄹ sound pretty similar people mistakenly nasalize when pronouncing his name, including the president himself. But he openly said he preferred that pronunciation multiple times, so koreans tend to respect his preference, including news outlets. Hope this helps ;)

The acting president refused to appoint Constitutional Court justices properly selected by the National Assembly in accordance with legal procedures. Additionally, the acting president rejected the special prosecutor law, passed by the National Assembly, which was intended to investigate the president's role in the insurrection. Right now, the Korean people have lost trust in the ministers who make up the cabinet. They have either actively participated in or silently enabled the treason committed by a deranged president. The Korean people no longer want ministers or vice ministers who undermine constitutional order. These individuals were not elected by the people-they are opportunists eager to assist a reckless president. They, too, are complicit. But Don't worry, everyone. Korea's constitution is well-designed to handle situations like this, shaped by our history of military dictatorships and numerous declarations of martial law. Currently, the National Assembly is the only institution in Korea with authority granted directly by the people through democratic elections. This crisis will pass soon. It’s just the final hurdle. For reference, according to the prosecution's announcement yesterday, the president ordered special forces and other military personnel to break down doors, use firearms if necessary, and drag out and arrest members of the National Assembly. This included the opposition leader, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and even the ruling party leader who had clashed with the president. The president explicitly commanded them to storm the Assembly immediately, stating, "Even if they pass a resolution to lift martial law, I can just impose it again, once, twice, or as many times as needed. Break down the doors and pull them out right now
