I have worked in STEM as a programmer for thirty years and I can state unequivocally that hiring H1-B visa holders from India, Pakistan, China, etc. is about $$$$$ and power, not about a lack of American brainpower or drive. These tech CEO's want to pay less for top talent and not have to worry about anyone trying to unionize or bargain collectively for better healthcare, hours, childcare, training on new technologies, etc. H1-B visa holders (in my experience) have almost always been Caucasian/Asian men, which takes jobs away from American women and American people of color in STEM. This is true except for the occasional rare cases of companies hiring young women from the Philippines for entry-level tech jobs and then laying off highly competent American-born tech workers in order to pay MUCH LESS in salary/benefits. This is an illegal use of the H1-B visa program, by the way. It is supposed to be reserved for positions that companies simply COULD NOT fill (after a long, hard, search) with American STEM workers. But of course the companies cheat in order to maximize profit. It is not "anti-immigrant" to say that if companies are abusing the H1-B visa program then that hurts American-born, American-educated, STEM workers who are seeking employment. It really, really, does hurt Americans who have been paying taxes (and their parents and grandparents have been paying taxes), fighting in wars, working long & hard to improve our communities, etc. for decades to centuries. I have cordial working relationships with the many foreign-born STEM workers that I encounter on a daily basis. I don't hate them or want them to fail. However, I also know MANY talented, hard-working, highly motivated, American-born STEM workers who have been out of work for 18 months or longer. It simply is not fair to allow companies to abuse the H1-B visa program just to make another billion for spoiled-rotten, tax-avoiding, CEOs.

H1-Bs can't change companies, so they can be forced to work 90 hours a week for peanuts. That's why one second after they get their green card they are out the door for a better job and their employers has to find another H1-B they can exploit. One difference between an O-1 and an H1-B is that the O-1 guy can change companies, and get visa renewals, so it's harder to exploit them. There are also fewer of them because it's harder to get, so many potential O-1 will apply for H1-Bs instead.
