The boss of a US firm has been criticised after he fired around 900 of his staff on a single Zoom call.
"If you're on this call you're part of the unlucky group being laid off," said Vishal Garg, chief executive of mortgage firm Better.com, on the call, later uploaded to social media.
Comments on social media said it was "cold", "harsh" and "a horrible move", especially in the run up to Christmas.

I was discussing a situation a little like this with a friend. There wasn't enough money in the pension pot to pay the pensions that he and his co-workers were promised. When I asked him which individuals he would like the money taken from to make up the shortfall from the pension pot he didn't have an answer. That is the problem here. If there isn't enough money to pay the wages of these people. Which people would you like the money to be taken from to give to the employees?

It is simply "announced to people" during a meeting. Maybe he started to run the process and pay severance pay after the meeying. There has laws I don't think any company can / will try to get away from this very clear laid off. Severance pay is a normal things nowadays. We aren't those employees, we don't know if they really didn't get paid salary of notice days and severance pay.

Yeah that is a shit behaviour from the Boss but i have seen much worse!! Trust me i know...🥺 In 2013 we had a employee meeting in a city about 3.5 hours away at 8 in the moring from where we worked. At the entrance we got a small piece of paper with one letter on it ( A,B,C, D or E). After that we sat down in a massive room ( for 1600 people) our boss had a speech about how great we all were and bla, bla, bla. After the speech (20 minutes) he said that the people with the letters C,D and E go to the room next and A&B could stay. I had the letter C. About 1100 people went to the other room. Once everybody was in the room. They closed the doors and a woman came and said "Well you are all fired today, goodbye". Then she left the room and left us there like we where nothing. I worked for that company for 12 years and some people had worked for more than 20 years for the company were kick out like it was nothing. Not even the boss himself had the courage to tell it. No thank you, no goodbye gift or what so ever. We drove 3.5 hours for being fired and we had to drive 3.5 hours back home knowing we were fired. Like WTF!!! So yeah it sucks to hear it on Zoom that your fired, but atleast they didn't had to drive 7 hours for nothing to hear that same news. It isn't my first i have been fired but this one was by far the worst experience. I rather have phone call and say that i am fired than this.

Would just like to add to the international viewers of this video that here in America, your health insurance is tied to your employer's offered health insurance packages for the most part (which is a premium that companies have to pay for, and often cheap out on, as well as benefit from severing long-time workers over so they no longer have to pay for said insurance packages), so all these workers are left without a job and likely without health coverage during one of the most money-draining and infectious times of the year.

But most jobs will ALSO loophole not having to give you insurance by booking you on for just under 40 hours a week, like 37.5 or some shit. And don't even get me started on the slave class that is waitress wages, where their tips have to make up for the fact that their employer pays them UNDER minimum wage. He clearly needs some training and education on his end, he runs the company, if his $$$ goes down, he's responsible for knowing how to make a profit with advertising and so much more. What trash. In case he hasn't noticed, employees are also setting higher standards for what they get out of a job. His loss. Those ppl deserve better, I hope everything works out for them.

What a pathetic excuse for a human being... not even a thank-you for being a part of his company or I'm sorry to have to do this. What a kick in the teeth from your nasty, money grubbing boss... two weeks before Christmas too! (Reminds me of a repulsive client I worked for in Montreal, that always told his staff every year that business was bad and there would be no raises or bonuses... yet for over a decade, he had paid his wife 40 thousand dollars every year, and his partner paid his son 40 thousand every year and his daughter got 40 thousand dollars every year too, and none of them ever worked a day at the company. They would show up at the office for lunch, every 2 weeks, to collect their free 'pay check' and get a free lunch too... then when the direct bank deposit was set up, you never saw them. They couldn't be bothered to drop by the office to say thank-you and stay for lunch. The client and his partner both had their house keepers on the company payroll too... but remember, there was no money for any of the staff that walked in the office everyday and did some work, to get a raise or a bonus at Christmas.)

If he'd left human resources to do it, he'd have been castigated for being a coward. The greater question is, why is this the SECOND time he's had to do this? If their employment is performance based and they're not performing, then this is reasonable. If they did regular jobs, and it was HIS ineptitude, then HE'S the one that should be out on the street.

You guys can label me racist lol because you can get named racist these days for just about anything, but I dealt with people in higher positions in various companies and it's all the same, culture in India is such that for them such actions are normal. Recently a Dentist in Woodstock, Ontario Canada gave all his staff letters that they will be terminated, also just before Christmas, he cut their holidays, and just about every other benefit, talks to his staff like they are trash and it is thanks to these people that he is successful, he circumvented a loophole in a system so he didn't have to pay severance package to his employees. Any company that selects an Indian native for position such as CEO is asking for trouble, they come from culture where being rude, lack of compassion, unfair, taking advantage of others, this is all part of Indian culture, they just keep forgetting that in western countries that won't necessarily be tolerated.

I mean maybe the company cannot pay the employees anymore so they decided to fire 15%? I'm thinking simple. If they don't have enough fund or is losing in business then the basic strategy would be to lessen employees. At least they are paying them just right before firing them. I always see news of companies unable to pay their employees. Those were companies who continue operating just like normal even if they are losing money but they didn't inform the employees. In the end the employees wouldn't be paid for their work for months. This, I think, is better in comparison. At least, he is straightforward, no more bullshit. Although, it's a tough time, I pray for the employees to be able to find work after as well.
