Fariel Salahuddin is not the type of person you’d expect to see wandering around rural Pakistan, especially with a herd of goats. She’s a successful energy consultant who has worked around the world. But when she returned to where she grew up, Pakistan, Fariel decided she wanted to work on smaller projects to try to make an immediate impact and provide solar energy to poor, rural communities. This was all very well, until she realised these places didn’t have water, let alone power. What they did have was goats. Fariel developed an innovative scheme to trade what the villagers have in plentiful supply for something they desperately needed: goats for water. But what was Fariel going to do with all her newly acquired goats?

turning goats into water and trading goats for water are two very different things, is the BBC not getting enough viewers without click bating?

@Mohit Patel the goat is nothing to the woman compared to water. In any case, if there was no collateral the pump wouldn't have lasted. Either destroy by the villagers, or kids, or misused etc. Now even if someone if bent on vandalism, the whole village will give him/she a good beating, because they invested goats in that pump!!

Great initiative by the lady. They should plant more trees in those deserted area as china and Israel did in their dry barren lands. so that the rain water won't run away and rather absorbed by the roots and seep below recharging the ground water.

what a rough life, and yet people survive there for 100's of years. The lady at 3:30 humbles me. She gave up her only goat to pitch in for the water project. Most people don't understand how lucky they are to just turn on a faucet and get fresh, clean water. If we don't start doing some conservation soon, we may end up in a similar situation someday.

look into Geoff Lawton's greening of the desert with Permaculture. They need to plant trees and get the rain cycle going again. This is not a solution, just a temporary bandage. Africa needs to get serious about Greening their lands.
@GiridharKulkarni
@GiridharKulkarni 7 жыл бұрын
havfaith S. His claims remains unfounded scientifically. Yes, I would agree it can be used to turn barren lands fertile and green again and that would also increase the rainfall in that area but turning naturally occurring deserts green, you have to be smoking something green to believe in it.
@GiridharKulkarni
@GiridharKulkarni 7 жыл бұрын
havfaith S. As for the Geoff Lawton's little experiment, it cannot be used to turn real deserts like Sahara or Thar green. These have different topography than Dead sea where the salinity and the temperature were the culprit. These are micro factors which can be changed with permaculture. Sahara desert on the other hand exists because of the macro factors (global), you will have to change things like ocean currents for example in order to make it rain there, planting trees and irrigating such a land would only cause droughts and form more barren lands (deserts) elsewhere.

Wow! I absolutely loved this concept. Charity makes people feel uninvolved in their life. But when they offer something valuable they are inadvertently taking responsibility of that change. Imposing charity is not a good idea. These people feel like they are part of this project in their own way and this makes them want to make it successful. Good job Miss Fariel!

I was expecting to see goats turning the pump, walking in a circle, like how horses/cattle would turn mills. The obvious problem with this is if they keep pumping more water, and not planting drought resistant plants to hold the water, then the wells will run dry. Planting jatropha, a drought resistant plant native to India, would provide a source of bio-fuel, money, and resilience for the land. Jatropha berries are 67% oil, and can be pressed for bio-fuel.

Its good that she is trying to help them but in case a person got fever and they need money for treatment. From where required money will be collected if they have already sold theur goats for water and electricity? Would she (Fariel) help them with money or not? Bcoz if people already gave goats to fariel then what would they do if hard time come to a family member? From where they would sell another goatsa if there are only 2 and both they sold already to fariel? Think twice she is doing good but as well as makin them bare handed in terms of self help that they would do by selling goats at hard time. They woukd end up with no goats when they need money. Its the responsibility of govt. To provide grants for installing water works department for free as it is available in punjab province of india.

Gr8. Keep it up. In India Govt gives 50% subsidy to farmers installing Solar panel for their tube wells. I am a Senior Citizen ,retired Govt servant, and last year (2017) I did a EDP course on "Solar Energy" organised weekly in all cities and towns by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Govt Of India.All State Govt give subsidy on installation of Solar panels on individual houses and reduction of bill for those, who divert excess electricity to the main grid. Tough State Government Haryana has enforced a law that your Society building or a House plan design will be passed by the Municipal committee only if you install Solar Panels on your roof. The scheme is really paying off and locals are extremely happy about it.

This idea of installing solar panels to fulfill the need of rural Sindh makes sense. But political vultures like PPP who get their victories from rural Sindh based on bartering vote for insignificant favors, are hell bent on denying urban districts (especially those that don't vote for them) of much needed municipal budget for infrastructure repair so they can build infrastructure in rural Sindh (or so they allegedly claim for the past 30 years). Have they done what they claimed, fact that 30 years and villages like this exist prove they have done nothing but appropriate that budget for personal use. the city districts have not seen infrastructure repair in nearly all but the wealthiest areas (where these thieves and their patrons live) for the past 30 years and ppl have to resort to raise funds locally to rebuild the infrastructure only to have it torn down by these monsters so they can claim the glory of the deed when elections are around the corner. Please stop voting them into office. Stop diluting the urban votes among small local parties, coalition governments are an abject failure for Pakistan always trapped in a deadlock of critical decisions. Vote for on national party that is not jaded by decades of certain victory in every election.
Please Help This Poor Boy 🙏
