The British and Irish prime ministers have issued a joint statement calling for calm after days of rioting in Northern Ireland.
Police in Belfast say the violence is the worst they have seen in recent years, scenes that many had believed were a thing of the past.
During an emergency session of the Northern Ireland Assembly politicians on all sides lined up to condemn the violence.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Ireland Correspondent Emma Vardy.

@@wik7or214 No mate unfortunately not! They tried to arrest as much of the IRA on the falls by imposing a curfew on the entire falls road community. People were finding it difficult to get food with British army pointing a rifle at you. Yeah they made arrests but it did more harm because it dramatically increased members to the IRA afterwards.

There will only be peace when British rule is abolished and all Unionists have moved to England and Ireland is a unified island as the Irish Republic. These are not walls of peace, but concentration camp walls. The British imprison the Catholics, just like the Nazis did with the Jews in the concentration camps. Freedom for Northern Ireland, down with the occupying power. The United Kingdom is no better than Nazi Germany. I am not a member of the IRA, just a person from continental Europe who has a different opinion about Northern Ireland than it is mainstream.

And you deserve to be important and well funded. I’m guessing you’re ready to compete with other countries economically and militarily on your own. Good luck with that. Your criminal level leaders have more power than the citizens. Getting minors who have parent(s) to stir the pot and take the focus from studying, working smart and moving forward. The real power comes from intelligence, compromise, unity, diligence and organization. For centuries the Irish have been revered! Great authors, great traditions, good people. It would be better described as an ethno-religious conflict. It's not just that nationalists are Catholics and unionists are Protestants, nationalists feel themselves to be Irish, not British, and unionists vice versa. Not that many people on either side could actually tell you the doctrinal differences between Catholicism and Protestantism. It's a clash between two identities, which both have several layers and different overlapping historical influences on them. I don't imagine it's a conflict that will ever be resolved. At best, we can hand over the policing aspect to the Irish if there's a border poll and they vote for unification with Ireland.

It's amazing how many people here think it's about religion. Heck, I'm American and even I know that's not what it's about. You have a group that happens to identify as Catholic, and another group that Happens to identify as protestant. That's neither here nor there. That division is semi-cultural. The problem is that one group likes to be ruled by England, the other group wants to keep their identity and be separate, along with all the nuances involved in those differences. THAT is what it's about! People in places like here, Reddit, Twitter, etc... hear "catholic/protestant" and yell "SEE??? IT'S RELIGIONS FAULT!!! REEEEEEE!!!" as they lose their shit. Social media, entertainment/news sites may encourage this disinformation considering the attention it gets by those yearning to piss over religion, but any small bit of education & common sense would tell you what the real problems are. Please don't be one of the clueless
