A solitary killer whale, or orca, has been filmed hunting and killing a great white shark in an "astonishing" attack off the coast of South Africa.
Scientists said it was "unprecedented" and showed the exceptional predatory skills of killer whales.
Two orcas in particular off South Africa's coast have been observed before working together to hunt and kill sharks, including great whites.
Dr Alison Towner, a marine biologist from Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, led the study.
"This caught us off guard," said shark biologist Dr Towner.

This is Port and Starboard, Two famous Orcas on our coast off the Southern Cape of South Africa. The duo are identified as having rare and distinct collapsed dorsal fins and they are named for the nautical terms, as Port's fin collapses left and Starboard's collapses right. All types of liver are richer in vitamins and minerals than muscle meats and many fruits and vegetables. Liver contains plenty of protein, iron, and B vitamins. There is Plenty food for the Orcas here, it is certainly not a decision based on scarcity of food. I am privileged to have seen them here in Plettenberg Bay

@@SayWhut276 I don't think realased orcas would have so much skill in hunting, let alone sharks. It may depend on whether they were captive bred or caught and then released again. Their dorsal fin bends or weakens mainly due to injuries or sickness. So it is possible in the wild and not only in capticity.

That was Starboard, the name of the orca. Usually, he is with Port, another male orca which also has a bent dorsal fin. They were named Port and Starboard because one of their dorsal fins flops over to the left and the other to the right. The boys are most proficient in killing sharks.

An 8 feet long GWS is no problem for a solo attack but a GWS twice the size will need more than one orca to kill it. Orcas are intelligent enough to realise when prey of a bigger size requires more of them to kill it like they do with whales bigger than the orcas themselves hence why they're known as the wolves of the ocean that they hunt in packs.

It’s rare but they can be unpredictable there has been a few Orca trainers at Aquariums and things who have been killed or attacked by them. Most of them look like the Orca just randomly decided to play with the person and drag them around like a toy so they drowned rather than frenzied but still that’s horrific for a fragile human body. I guess it like us when pick up an insect kinda hard not to break them
@GrabbaBeer

That’s wrong. Orcas don’t hunt or eat us because they choose not to with their intelligence. Sharks know we are prey and know exactly what we are. They have senses stronger than a bomb sniffing dog. The only difference is great whites just don’t care if we’re human or not. They will consume us when they choose to. There is no mistaken identity. That is a myth created by conservationists to prevent hunting out of fear.

Livers make up about a third of a sharks’ body weight and are rich in a nutritious oil called squalene, making them highly appealing to orcas. That one liver may sustain an orca for one whole day.
