He was sectioned by a doctor and this was ran past other doctors and professionals, his wife signed to be the person that can talk on his behalf as someone who knows him best, SHE DID NOT SECTION HIM. writing that as the title gives the wrong impression of how all this works and scares people into thinking someone can get them sectioned against their will. Mental illness is terrifying for the sufferer and the friends and family around them. I had a brother who started behaving bizarre, unpredictable, alien to us. He walked around naked, smashed things up, and told us he heard evil voices. He told us he saw his doppelganger one day. Was diagnosed schizophrenic and put on some American drug in '90s. I talked about some of this in school but got laughed at and outcast by "friends". It was shame at the time, also my mother's alcoholism. "Just deal with it". Then my brother died under the care of mental health workers. Just dropped dead of a heart attack while they took him out walking in the countryside. 29 years old. My drinking was there but got worse. Imagined revenge on the mental health people for killing him. Screwed a lot of things up since. I never trusted anybody for years. I know these were delusions or my own mental illness. I am glad there's less of a stigma nowadays and that honesty and enlightenment, illuminating the darkness, is the way.

Huge respect for Heston and his wife for speaking publicly about this. As a mental health nurse I've looked after patients who have been diagnosed with bipolar later in life (40s and above) - and as a person who was recently diagnosed with bipolar at age 48- this disorder can easily fly under the radar for years until the symptoms become extreme that the risk of harm to self is high. The stigma around mental illness needs to be eradicated so that folks access help for their mental health as easily and often as they do for any physical ailments because just like physical sickness, the outcomes for managing mental illness are far better when detected early.

Thank you for being so open. My mother has suffered with extreme bi polar and manic depression my whole life. It's very difficult to explain to people what this does to people, so you highlighting it will make it so much easier for people to understand!

One hard part of diagnosis after being successful is that you liked who you were, you had a strong self image, felt talented, knew your personality and then, on diagnosis it feels like you discover that all that happiness and brilliance and personality was just pathology, just symptoms and your whole sense of self feels stripped away. I am 13 years since diagnosis, meds are hard but... I learned my talents were not imaginary. Stable and medicated (and it can takes years to find the right med) I still have my talents. I still have my personality. I am just calmer now and pace myself better but re-entering my field has been a dfferent matter - meds are sedating but I take them for my loved ones. But Heston knowing he is still a brilliant chef might really help, just life needs a different pace now. I do get anxious that returning to my talents will be a trigger but it seems so far not to be. I hope that is reassuring for others on this life journey.

His wife didn’t section him, she got professionals involved. Stuff like this is why vulnerable people worry about and get threatened with getting sectioned on their parents’/partner’s say-so.
@davem92042 ай бұрын
Sectioning can only be done by the professionals anyway and it is usually done for the individual's own safety.

I was wondering what happened to Heston after seeing him on tv a lot then nothing for years. Doing 120hrs a week for 10yrs is insane. Now I did a 56 hour continuous stretch to complete a commission piece but I then needed 3 days to recover and most of that was sleeping. I’m surprised he didn’t suffer from burnout or something else . No industry is worth doing that amount of hours and to remain sane and healthy.

sadly its the food thats triggering his BPD. Theres mounting scientific evidence that mental health disorders are directly associated to food
@KK-lg8uz2 ай бұрын
Its actually related to his diet, its whats triggering his BPD. There is mounting evidence that mental health disorders are directly associated with the food we eat. In many cases it can be reversed. Very brave to speak out about these conditions and his experiences. People in positions like his speaking about mental health will help lots of other men in particular to see there’s no shame in getting the help they might need. It’s ridiculous in 2024 that there is still stigma related to mental health. If more people spoke about it the world would be an easier place for everyone.

Bipolar is often misdiagnosed as depression. When you're flying, your output of work can be extraordinary....but it's unsustainable in the long term . Many people misunderstand the highs ....the highs can be risk taking , dangerous and not at all funny ...the lows- deep, dark and equally dangerous. Getting a diagnosis is key and then taking mood stabilisers along with other appropriate meds. It can literally save a person's life .

These 120 hr weeks remind me of my days as a junior doctor. Ofcourse we weren't cooking meals just trying to save lives and help people. We didn't do that for 10 years but we did have to do 80 hr weeks while studying for specialty exams. Now I'm retired I realise the high cost to my wellbeing, including burnout and chronic fatigue. We need to love ourselves wholesomely while we are young.
