First time I went to Greece and asked people "Do you speak English?" they often replied "nai". It took me some time to realize it actually means "Yes".

I'm sad to say that this really happens! I was in France not long ago and i was lost. I went up to a woman, asked if she spoke english and she said 'no, i do not speak english, now if you don't mind, i'm on my way to buy some begonias!' and she walked off. This is absolutely true!

I don't know what the begging situation looks like where you were but in Vienna, if somebody asks you if you speak English, about 19/20 times it's somebody who if you stop starts going into often pretty long-winded monologues about how they want some money from you. So maybe she assumed that that's what would happen if she stopped to listen. (It's of course still weird that she didn't just ignore you or lie.)

@Mario There's more to Britain than England. :) Besides, I meant in terms of pronunciation and ability: more people know French, but those who know German can, IME, speak it far better. We Brits find German a lot easier to pronounce than French, as it has fewer new sounds to learn and pronunciation is closer to English than languages like French.

They're basically saying they don't understand her as they don't speak English, the chap on the bike tries to communicate that there is a village nearby where she has a good chance of meeting somone who can speak English. The delivery comes at the end when both men reveal they can actually speak English.

It's good to know other languages but you have to be able to use them and have a lot of free time.My mom knew German language very well in her student years but after years of not practicing it she forgot it.When I travel it's impossible to learn language of each country I'm visiting. Majority of people know English because it's international language of communication.
