I think survival skills should be taught to all people who will go into the wilderness, or who live in/near a wilderness area. I mean, technology is great yes, but technology can fail. Then what? Your a bit stuck then. These skills are pretty universal. Especially lighting fires and cooking. Pretty universal no matter what the terrain. Also, i feel that these sorts of things give you an appreciation for the world around you. At least, i feel that it has given me more of an appreciation.

if you think of it. im young and i think low tech survival is a must to learn in an area like this. If they were cut off of any support/higher tech and had to live it out whether it be a week or a year it would be wise to learn survival skills. even if you may not need them anytime soon but to pass it on encase you kids or grandkids need them in the future.

The jigger floats upside-down right under the ice, pulling the rope moves the jigger forward as shown, then the weight of the metal rod makes it drop (the fisherman says that) to a perpendicular position ready to repeat the processe.

@jonathanh040 it is hard. Caribou have greater senses of hearing and possibly sight, and they can run faster. Plus there isn't camouflage for the hunter. Also, did you not just hear the end? They're trying to keep their tradition alive, they are trying to keep to the old ways.

Though he demonstrated on the ice, I would have liked to see the jigger in action in the water. I just wonder how that would really work, wouldn't there be rocks and uneven surface that would get in the way. Can't imagine that thing working flawlessly.

Rocks in the ice? That is highly unlikely. Uneven surface - could happen, but it's a lake so it will freeze quite evenly and thus eliminating the problem.
