My first time voting I voted for her. She was the most real candidate we've ever had.

So cool. I was not aware of this history and I am 71. Living in Hawaii in those days and ignorant to mainland politics.

I’m just so grateful for her that she started great and finished up great. Some amazing leaders start great and become corrupt in the end. She’s a true example of greatness, true power

*Support* Goodmorning 🦅 💜 Why are so many people afraid of change no matter who they are🤔 She had a lot of support, like they said, but she didn't have support by some black people and that's ok because everything that we do to help others and make a change is all about an impact..Shirley was a strong, intelligent fearless woman who will be remembered for the change that she made and the doors that she has opened right here in America..💙💚 God bless you all🇺🇲

For the posters stating Shirley Chisholm wasnt the first, read past the title. They clarify... "When Shirley Chisholm announced her intention to run for the US presidency on 25 January 1972, she became the *first major-party African-American candidate* to seek their nomination to run for the country’s highest office."

Actually it was Charlene Mitchell in 1968 who was the first black woman to run! Shirley Chisholm simply worked to get the democratic nomination.
