BBRG PRESENTS: Annual Keynote Talk - Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak Situating Feminism
Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, University Professor and Director of the Center for Comparative Literature and Society, Columbia University
This presentation will attempt to situate feminism geographically, in terms of the triumph of the Euro-specific (even Anglo-specific) model, in terms of the history of both of Marxism and Capitalism. It will trace feminisms itinerary through both coloniality and globalization. It will also attempt to situate feminism historically in terms of the provenance of what we at radical U.S. universities call feminism and see how it reflects on the development of mobility among women in terms of not only capital but also the great engines of world governance.
Organized by: The Beatrice Bain Research Group
Co-sponsored by: Department of Comparative Literature, Department of Rhetoric, Department of Sociology, Department of Gender and Women's Studies- Li Ka Shing Lectures, Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies, English Department, Townsend Center for the Humanities, Center for Race and Gender, Center for South Asia Studies, Department of Geography, Center for the Study of Sexual Cultures, the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory, and the Townsend Center Working Group on Muslim Identities and Cultures

I love her because of one primary reason and that is my mother is her cousin. I have heard a lot about this literary genius from my mother and she would fondly call her Gayatridi.

Spivak singing, joking, and bashing capitalism no matter what disguise it takes. Awesome

Still she requires capitalism to survive. It is the capitalism that pays her.

It is possible to like money but dislikes capitalism and to know 'how to communicate with the stars' means the state can only be corrupt up to a point. She gets paid to fight like my uncle got a lot of social capital for teaching others to sail wooden ships without respect for traditional capitalist power

@@choudhurysaheb8326There is no space for her to be apart from capitalism- for anyone on the planet to be apart from capitalism- especially someone with her platform who wishes to spread ideas. Although I heard Chandra Talpade Mohanty mentions a capitalistic feminism within Western academics in one of her books…I am not sure if Spivak aligns with this yet she has been in the West a long time and seems to appeal massively to Western white feminists.

This is great. Thanks for the upload. Though I'm sorry that the comments section was plagued by fedora-wearing MRAs who are scared of women though. :(

Haha that was a interesting, insightful and, i must say, really quite moving talk especially toward the end. I suppose just mentioning it degrades the level of discourse... Doesn't Spivak have a beautiful smile? It warms my heart.

I find this hard to follow. Could anyone explain what she means by 'developing self-interest for the woman below'?

I *think* she means doing activism not in some kind of remote way, such as "collecting funds" for unknown, never-seen, "poor women" in some remote place, but to form actual relationships, friendships, bonds, commitments. In effect it is a very demanding kind of activism, if I am reading her correctly; at any rate the argument goes that only in a real, and humble, kind of relationship with the "woman below," can one effect any truly lasting change, and perhaps break out of the hegemonic systems perpetuated by neo-liberal, global capitalist structures.

You said: "(9/10ths of you (women) are slaves to your emotions)" and yet reading through the comments here, it is overwhelmingly the men who come across as emotional, irrational, unable to control the need (surely an emotional one ruled by hormones) to think about and comment upon their sexual urges, and illogical. Just a few "facts" for your male brain: equality is not yours to give; everyone's brain thinks subjectively - this is why science uses the double blind, randomised study as the gold standard when testing the results of experiments - it has nothing to do with which sex you are. Oh shucks! I can't be bothered typing anymore I'll just go and rest my weary little girly ass whilst whining to my partner to get me a drink before he leaves for the night shift where he earns all the money for me to spend on my make up and clothes. By the way - in case you don't get it - being as your so logical and all - that last sentence was a joke.
